Solitude
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In my solitude
You haunt me
With dreadful ease
Of days gone by

In my solitude
You taunt me
With memories
That never die

I sit in my chair
And filled with despair
There's no one could be so sad
With gloom everywhere
I sit and I stare
I know that I'll soon go mad

In my solitude
I'm afraid
Dear Lord above
Send back my love

I sit in my chair
Filled with despair
There's no one
Could be so sad
With gloom everywhere
I sit and I stare
I know that I'll soon go mad

In my solitude
I'm afraid

Dear Lord above
Send me back my love

“In My Solitude” (1934) was composed and arranged by Duke Ellington, with lyrics by Eddie DeLange and Irving Mills. The piece was recorded at least 28 times (❕) between 1934 and 1942.

Billie Holiday, nicknamed Lady Day, performed it several times in the 1940s and 1950s, with the world-weariness of the words matching to quite a disturbing degree her late-career persona.

It appeared on “Billie Holiday Sings” (1952), was reissued in 1956, and finally renamed “Solitude”, as the famed vocalist’s SIGNATURE SONG.

One of her renditions of the jazz standard was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2021.

May you rest in peace, LADY DAY (1915 - 1959)… 🌹… and Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington (1899 - 1974)… 🌹
