T'Ain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There ain't nothing I can do
Or nothing I can say
Just what I want to anyway
And I don't care just what people may say
And if I, if I take a notion
The jump-off into the ocean
Ain't nobody's bizness if I do
And if I go to church on sunday
Then cabaret all day monday
It ain't nobody's bizness if I do

If my baby ain't got no money
And I say take all of mine honey
Ain't nobody's bizness if I do
If I give my baby my last nickle, O
And it leaves me, leaves me in a pickle
It ain't nobody's bizness if I do
I'd rather from my baby to hit me
Then to jump off and quit me

Ain't nobody's bizness if I do
Nobody's bizness if I do

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Billie Holiday's song T'Ain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do express a sense of independence, defiance, and nonconformity. The song is a declaration of the singer's right to live life on her own terms, free from the judgment and scrutiny of others. The first stanza sets the tone for the rest of the song, indicating that the singer will do what she wants, regardless of what anyone else thinks. She asserts that her decisions and actions are nobody's business but her own.

The following stanzas describe several scenarios where the singer's actions might be deemed questionable or inappropriate by societal and moral standards, but she makes it clear that she will do what she wants anyway. Whether it be taking a leap into the ocean or spending time at a cabaret, the singer will not let anyone dictate her choices. The verse about giving her last nickel to her partner illustrates her loyalty and devotion, even if it might leave her in a difficult situation. She believes that it should be her choice and hers alone to take care of her loved ones, and nobody else's concern. The final line emphasizes the central theme of the song: the singer's life is nobody's business but her own.

Overall, the lyrics of T'Ain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do offer a message of empowerment and individuality, encouraging listeners to stay true to themselves and their choices, regardless of societal norms or expectations.

There ain't nothing I can do
Or nothing I can say
That folks don't criticize me
But I'm going to do just as I want to anyway
And don't care just what people say

If I should take the notion
To jump into the ocean
Ain't nobody's business if I do

If I go to church on Sunday
Then cabaret all day Monday
Ain't nobody's business if I do

If my man ain't got no money
And I say, "Take all of mine, honey"
Ain't nobody's business if I do

If I give him my last nickel
And it leaves me in a pickle
Ain't nobody's business if I do

Well, I'd rather my man would hit me
Than for him to jump up and quit me
Ain't nobody's business if I do

I swear I won't call no copper
If I'm beat up by my papa
Ain't nobody's business if I do

Nobody's business
Ain't nobody's business
Nobody's business if I do

@josephcarter5101

Fantastic as the lady always was...

One line got me...

"I would rather my man hit me, than up and quit me"....?

Am no member of the political correctness police but in the words of the legend,

Fats Waller, (with Ada Brown),

THAT AIN'T RIGHT!!!

Always wonderful to hear such classic music.

Thank you!

There ain't nothin' I can do, or nothin' I can say
That folks don't criticise me,
But I'm going to do just as I want to anyway,
And don't care if you all despise me!
If I should take a notion
To jump into the ocean,
'T'aint nobody's business if I do, do, do!
If I go to church on Sunday,
Then just shimmy down on Monday,
'T'aint nobody's business if I do, if I do!
If my friend ain't got no money,
And I say, "Take all mine, honey",
'T'aint nobody's business if I do, do, do do!
If I give him my lasy nickel,
And it leaves me in a pickle,
'T'aint nobody's business if I do, if I do!
There, I'd rather my man was hittin' me,
Than to jump right up and quittin' me,
'T'aint nobody's business if I do, do, do do!
I swear I won't call no copper
If I'm beat up by my papa,
'T'aint nobody's business if I do, if I do!

My best childhood memories are of this song. My grandmother would teach me to cook in the kitchen with every Billie holiday song playing in the background. I always replayed this one most.

@taralees995

Such a beautiful groove w strength then in true Billie style actual truth...abuse, confusion. Always one to make a statement. BA

@daniellebain4294

Not her original tune.

Each time "Lady Sings the Blues" airs on TV, I watch it,
and if I have something to get to, I drop it,
and ain't nobody's business if I do!

The woman's talent was rated high and yet I still feel like it wasn't rated high enough. "God Bless the Child" was one of my favorite and she had a very unique sense of timing & rhythm. Her addiction was a tragedy but she died of liver disease 3 years after Carnegie Hall.

I went through that myself for over 20 years and my liver didn't take any punches. I must surmise that Billie's liver disease was alcohol related. There was a lot of 'bad booze' in the clubs back then and the Feds didn't have it regulated as closely, (if they regulated it at all), as they do today.
