Until The Real Thing Comes Along
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'd wait for you
I'd slave for you
I'd be a beggar or a knave for you
If that isn't love, it will have to do
Until the real thing comes along

I'd gladly move
The earth for you
To prove my love, dear
And its worth for you
If that isn't love, it will have to do
Until the real thing comes along.

With all the words, dear, at my command
I just can't make you understand
I'll always love you darling
Come what may
My heart is yours
What more can I say?

I'd lie for you
I'd sigh for you
I'd tear the stars down from the sky for you
If that isn't love, it will have to do
Until the real thing comes along

With all the words, dear, at my command
I just can't make you understand
I'll always love you baby
Come what may
My heart is yours
What more can I say?

I'd lie for you
I'd cry for you
I'd lay my body down and die tor you

If that isn't love, it will have to do
Until the real thing comes along

Overall Meaning

In Billie Holiday's song, "Until the Real Thing Comes Along," the singer expresses her undying love and dedication to the person she loves. She proclaims that she would wait and slave for them, even if it meant being a beggar or a knave, and that she would move heaven and earth to prove her love to them. She acknowledges that her love may not measure up to the "real thing," but until then, what she has will have to suffice.

Holiday's lyrics convey a sense of unrequited love. Despite her willingness to do anything and everything for her beloved, she feels that her efforts are not fully appreciated or reciprocated. She laments that she cannot make the object of her affection understand the depth of her love, even though she is willing to lie, cry, and even die for them. The song's melancholic tone suggests that the singer is resigned to the fact that she cannot force her love to be reciprocated and must content herself with what she has.

Overall, Billie Holiday's "Until the Real Thing Comes Along," is a poignant and heartfelt expression of love and devotion. Despite the singer's willingness to go to great lengths for her beloved, she recognizes that her love may not be enough. The song captures the bittersweet feeling of loving someone who cannot or will not love you in return.

There are two kinds of jazz singers - those who are Billy Holiday and those who are not. Those who are not divide into two categories also - those who came after Billy Holiday and who had to spend their careers being compared (mostly unfavourably, with exceptions like Sarah Vaughan) and those who had gone before her who at least had the crumb of consolation that they may in someway influenced her. No one ever, ever read a lyric like Billie Holiday and knew exactly how to communicate that meaning. It may not be what we read in the lyric, it was always what Holiday read and felt.
