Long Time Gone
Billie Joe + Norah Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You cheated me and made me lonely
I tried to be your very own
There'll be a day you'll want me only
But when I leave, I'll be a long time gone
Be a long time gone
Be a long time gone
Yes, when I leave, I'll be a long time gone
You're gonna be sad, you're gonna be weepin'
You're gonna be blue and all alone
You'll regret the day you seen me leavin'
'Cause when I leave, I'll be a long time gone
Be a long time gone
Be a long time gone
Yes, when I leave, I'll be a long time gone

You'll see my face through tears and sorrow
You'll miss the love you called your own
Baby, there'll be no tomorrow
'Cause when I leave, I'll be a long time gone
Be a long time gone
Be a long time gone
Yes, when I leave, I'll be a long time gone

I'll be a long time gone
I'll be a long time gone

Yes, when I leave, I'll be a long time gone
Yes, when I leave, I'll be a long time gone

Overall Meaning

The song "Long Time Gone" by Billie Joe and Norah speaks of a betrayal in a romantic relationship. The first line "You cheated me and made me lonely" indicates that the singer's partner had been unfaithful, causing the singer to feel betrayed and isolated. Despite their hurt, the singer still loves their partner and hopes that they will eventually realize their mistake and want the singer back. However, the singer has decided to leave, and he/she plans to be away for a long time.

The chorus repeats the line "Be a long time gone" showing that the singer is determined to stay away for a significant amount of time. They're sure that their partner will miss them and regret their actions. The second verse talks about the heartbreak their partner will experience after they leave. It seems that they were the ones who were always there for their partner and made them feel loved. Still, their partner took them for granted and now they'll experience emotional pain after being left alone.

The final verse shows that the singer is resolute to leave, and they know that their partner will never find love like what they had with the singer again. They emphasize that they won't be coming back, and there will be no tomorrow for their relationship. Altogether, the song speaks to the theme of heartbreak and betrayal in a relationship and the resolve to move on and find closure.

Love this, Billie Joe appreciates all types of music genres, nothing wrong with that

To me, punk has always been about doing whatever the fuck you want to do and not letting anyone tell you otherwise. Billie Joe has always done that, and I am so stoked for this album because it is Billie Joe doing what he wants to do, just like everything else he has always done. It's just an added bonus that Norah Jones is on it because I love her voice and her style. I cannot wait for this album!

Spot on!

Dallin Moon

Incredible that an iconic punk rock superstar is providing better country music than most of what comes out of Nashville these days. Didn't expect such a great country song from Billie Joe.

Isolde Potgieter

Absolutely agree. Too beautiful
