Out Of The Black
Billie Marten Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How did it feel
When it came alive and took you
Out of the black

It broke it's skin and shook through
Every part of me
Every part of you
You made a fool out of me and took the skin off my back running
So don't breathe when I talk 'cause you haven't been spoken to
I've got a gun for a mouth and a bullet with your name on it
Pulled a trigger for a heart beating blood from an empty pocket

And I never knew why
And you didn't care when
You closed every door
And washed away no sin
And I promised you
Like you promised me
That those vows we made
We messed them up
For free

You made a fool out of me and took the skin off my back running
So don't breathe when I talk 'cause you haven't been spoken to
I've got a gun for a mouth and a bullet with your name on it
Pulled a trigger for a heart beating blood from and empty pocket
An empty pocket

And it touches slow
Never lets you go
Deals a crooked hand

And it touches slow
Never lets you go
Deals a crooked hand

You made a fool out of me and took the skin off my back running
So don't breathe when I talk 'cause you haven't been spoken to
I've got a gun for a mouth and a bullet with your name on it

Pulled a trigger for a heart beating blood from and empty pocket
An empty pocket

Overall Meaning

The song "Out of the Black" by Billie Marten depicts a relationship that has gone wrong. The first two lines, "How did it feel when it came alive and took you out of the black," suggest that the relationship started off well and took the singer out of a dark place. However, something changed and it "broke its skin and shook through" every part of the singer and her partner. The use of the pronouns "me" and "you" in these lines contrast with the use of "we" and "us" later in the song, highlighting the emotional distance between the two.

The chorus is a powerful statement of the singer's anger towards her partner. She accuses them of making a fool out of her, taking everything from her, and leaving her with nothing. She threatens violence, describing herself as having a "gun for a mouth" and a "bullet with your name on it." The violence is metaphorical, but still unsettling. The repetition of the lines "You made a fool out of me and took the skin off my back running / So don't breathe when I talk 'cause you haven't been spoken to" emphasizes the singer's sense of betrayal and her desire to regain control.

The final lines of the song, "And it touches slow / Never lets you go / Deals a crooked hand," suggest that the singer has realized that the relationship was always going to end badly due to the other person's behavior. The use of the word "crooked" emphasizes the sense of unfairness and injustice that the singer feels. Overall, "Out of the Black" is a powerful and emotional song about a relationship that went wrong.

@moyno85

+Just Rachael Shut the fuck up about Thirteen. Apparently everyone here is from Thirteen because no one can find good music on their own anymore.

@rachael5651

Calm down. No need to get so angry, I’m allowed to find songs from shows and appreciate them

@blacklotus714

moyno85 so are we to believe you stumble upon every good song you've ever heard just by researching good music and spending hours looking online? Whether you hear a song on a movie, on the radio, or through word of mouth, you hear about it somewhere originally. The reason why this artist agreed to having her song on the show was in part for the publicity, so you should be happy that so many people are finding her now! She successfully pulled people in with just a few lines of her beautiful music, many of whom will continue to explore her music. Instead of being salty about pointless YouTube comments, shouldn't you be happy that an artist you love and support is getting more recognition for her wonderful talent?

Loved this at the end of Thirteen, brilliant and gripping show finished magnificently. The lyrics match Ivy's struggle and the serenity and gentleness of this version worked so well to add to it emotionally
