I finally saw this film for the first time yesterday and watching this scene felt almost surreal since I knew the guy in the middle was actually still alive, while the rest of the film felt like an ancient fantasy disconnected to our modern day world.

There was a special education teacher assigned to a student in my fourth grade class named Mrs. Marenghi in Chelmsford MA. I'll always remember She said she likes to joke she married into a famous family, her husband's uncle was Jerry Maren, the guy in the middle of the lollipop guild. Maren was from Lynn. He shortened his name from Marenghi because he didn't think people would be able to pronounce it. He was 17 at the time and had dropped out of high school to try acting. He was only 3 foot 6 at the time and had no perception it was a big role at all, nor that the movie would be popular. A lot of the second half of the movie was shot in 1937 and the budget was much lower at the time, a lot of the second half was reshot when they got more money from MGM.

Actually there are six surviving child Munchkins (young girls, average height, non-midget) who worked as Munchkins and were cast members. As of May 2017, six child Munchkins survive . Jerry Maren is the only midget Munchkin who survives. SC

Eric Bauer the one who is wearing red died at age 43 in 1960, his name was Jakob Jackie Gerlish, the one who is wearing blue was part of the 1920s and 1930s circus family known as the Doll family his sister was also part of the munchkin they were part of the 1932 horror movie "Freaks" he played the little man in freaked who gets poisoned by a average size women for his money because he played a rich little person and his sister played the little blond small women, they were from Germany his name was "Harry Earles" who died in 1985 at age 73.

I see some comments from people preferring the original voice, and that's fine, we're all entitled to our opinions, but I like the dubbed ones better. Why? Actually, as of now, there are two munchkins surviving, including Jerry Maren who you mentioned. The other is Ruth Duccini, who had an uncredited role, as one of the Munchkinland villagers.

Jerry Maren 24/1/1920-24/5/2018 aged 98 was the munchkin in the middle handing the lollipop to Dorothy, last surviving adult who appeared in The Wizard of Oz. I remember seeing the film for the first time when I was about 6 back in the mid sixties and was really disappointed when I saw it start in black & white thinking it would be in colour. Only to be so excited to see it change to colour after she opens the door when she walks out into Oz for the first time. 😊😊

Many years ago when I was in my early 20s, my girlfriend at the time forced me to sit through it even though I had seen it countless times as a kid. When Dorothy opened the door I started crying as my whole life changed! Growing up we were very poor and never had a color tv! I had no idea what made the movie so special.
