Everybody Lies
Billy Bob Thornton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everybody lies
Everybody ties
Someone to them
And takes a little dope
Everybody sighs
Everybody tries
To clear the smoke
When there's no fucking hope

Everybody fakes
Everybody breaks
And hearts get killed
Along the way
Everybody takes
Everybody makes
Their own rules
Of how the game is played

So we keep stopping at the lights
When they don't look
And we keep drawing all the lines
For their books

But you and I can't seem to play
A game that works
'Cause you and I can't seem to say
Yes to the jerks
So we hurt ourselves

But you and I can't seem to play
A game that works
'Cause you and I can't seem to say
Yes to the jerks
So we hurt ourselves

But you and I can't seem to play
A game that works
'Cause you and I can't seem to say
Yes to the jerks
So we hurt ourselves

But you and I can't seem to play
A game that works
'Cause you and I can't seem to say

Yes to the jerks
So we hurt ourselves

Overall Meaning

In "Everybody Lies," Billy Bob Thornton uses a lot of raw and emotional imagery to illustrate the idea that everyone has their struggles, and no one is perfect. He highlights how everyone tries to find comfort in different ways, some through taking drugs, others by faking happiness or breaking hearts of others, all in an attempt to fill the void. The line "when there's no fucking hope" shows the level of desperation and hopelessness people can feel when they are struggling. This exposes the reality that everyone has their secrets, and that nobody is free of their flaws.

In the last section of the song, Billy Bob Thornton describes how he and his partner/lover can't seem to play the game of life, as they're not willing to compromise their values by saying "yes to the jerks." This causes them to hurt themselves because by contrast, the jerks don't care if they hurt others in the process of getting what they want. By staying true to themselves, they hurt themselves because they are not willing to play the game of life on others' terms.

Overall, "Everybody Lies" is a song about the struggles we all go through, and learning to accept that nobody is perfect; we all make mistakes along the way.

Billy Bob is the kind of person that has lived such a diverse life, his stories are folklore.
He’s the man that everyone wants to be seated near at a dinner party.

Lone Wolf

Him in Fargo. My God. That was such stimulating performance.

@Lone Wolf oh my God, yeah that one scene was cringy AF. Great acting.

Luckiest, ballsiest hitman ever. Until he crosses paths with Nygaard. :D

@Julio Alves I envy your memory. I had forgotten the character's name. And yeah, no argument there. The scene when he tells the policeman to go back to his wife gave me chills.
