Back To The Old House
Billy Bragg Lyrics

I would rather not go,
Back to the old house.

I would rather not go,
Back to the old house,
Too many memories,
Bad memories,
Too many memories there.

When you cycled by,
Here begin all my dreams,
The saddest thing I've ever seen.

And you never knew,
How much I really liked you,
Cause I never even told you,
I meant to.

Are you still there?
Or have you, moved away,
Or have you moved away?

I would love to go
Back to the old house,
But I never will,
I never will,
I never will

This is a great version. I know Billy doesn’t have a great singing voice according to some but this is essentially a demo. Pardon the pun, but his voice here rings true with me.

Captures EXACTLY in both playing and vocal the romance, regret and resignation at the core of the original. (Trivia fact? Apparently, Marr wrote the music while imagining his feelings for his wife, and Morrissey added the lyric and melody later). xx SF

I like it

Beatle #9

Not a good vocal take, & too loud in mix.

My favourite Smiths song murdered by my favourite artist ! Not a great day !!

On a good day Billy can sing a good song. This wasn't a good day.

What do you dislike it? I actually dig the imperfections.

ruined by his dreadful voice
