Blake's Jerusalem
Billy Bragg Lyrics

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy lamb of god
On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem built here
Amongst these dark satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold
Bring me my arrows of desire
Bring me my spear, o clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire.

I will not cease from mental fight
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

Sung at Tony Benns funeral. You were there in spirit Billy.

Gotta love the comments saying "Billy hates England"etc... Really does show how ignorant & arrogant of fact people can be.

Love this version.  Billy's everyman voice offset by a beautiful backing voice, played on church-basement piano.....

It's interesting to know, that Blake's blazing song of social justice was sung at Tony Benn's funeral.   It's a great pity (to put it politely and mildly!) that this truly great song was edited out of the latest official Church of Scotland songbook/ hymnary. It could of course be sang as " this, our green and pleasant land" if the uptight Church ' powers that be' were somehow miffed about the word ' England '.  Anyway, I'm Scottish - and have always loved this passionate song just as it is - who would want to alter or to throw out the genius of working class Blake? Thanks for this fine performance by Billy Bragg, who understands and delivers what Blake's song is about. And understands how relevant it is for us today.

I am not familiar with Billy Bragg, but I love this version. I also now know how Michael Caine would sound singing - at least to my untutored, non-British self.

The Dude

I dunno wot this idiot is spouting below about Billy hating England. he fact that he sings this song should tell you otherwise! I for one would like it as our national anthem. TD

What a song. I love it.

This is clearly about Socialism.

Luke Batten

It's always been bitterly ironic that nationalists and flag-bashers are so in love with it—how many unofficial anthems can you think of that call for radical action against a then emergent Industrial Capitalism?
