Pretty Pretty Star

Spilling on the floor
Find a love a just because I need you, so much
Begging till I'm poor
Wanting so much more this hurts kid
Strangers find the eyes, just the same
Every time I start
Loneliness abounds
Pretty, pretty STAR
Only you remind me
That only you can find me, in you
In all I choose
Wait remind my life is mine so many travelers
Carry past the word
Flowers Jake the sun afraid I'm blinking softly
Wishing on your name
Wondering who to blame next, low this
Crawling towards the door, just the same
Every time I start
Reaching out to find you
Loneliness abounds
Pretty, pretty STAR
Only you remind me
That only love can blind
Every time I start
Emptiness confounds me
Loneliness astounds me
Pretty, pretty STAR
It's me and you
In all I choose
Show me
There's no other
The song, Pretty Pretty Star, is a melancholic portrayal of loneliness, yearning, and love. The lyrics are cryptic, but Billy Corgan - the songwriter - conveys a sense of vulnerability and isolation through the lyrics. The lines "Wind a spire survey the hours I'm secrets, secrets/Spilling on the floor" suggest that the singer has many secrets and personal struggles that they cannot articulate. The mention of a "love a just because" could be interpreted as the singer's need for companionship and affection, even if it's not from a genuine source. The chorus - "Every time I start/Reaching out to find you/Loneliness abounds/Pretty, pretty STAR" - shifts the focus of the song to the singer's desire for emotional connection. The "pretty, pretty STAR" serves as a metaphor for the unattainable object of the singer's affection.
The second verse touches on themes of mortality and regret. The mention of "so many travelers/Carry past the word" suggests that life is transient and fleeting. The line "Wishing on your name/Wondering who to blame next" implies a sense of futility and frustration. The singer is struggling to find meaning or purpose in their life, and they're desperate to avoid being alone. The outro - "Show me/There's no other" - is a plea to the "pretty, pretty STAR" to provide emotional support and validation.

Deeply introspective and atmospheric. I truly love this album, so many layers of love and heartbreak.

I've been following Smashing Pumpkins for some time now...and this song peers into my own feelings about love as a concept. Pretty, Pretty Star actually makes me feel at a loss for words...almost like the feeling you get before you feel like crying. Yet, these tears would be love offerings mixed with dreams of what could have been perfect!
