Once Upon a Dream
Billy Fury Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once, once upon a dream I met her
Long ago but somehow I can't forget her
I met her, once upon a dream

We built a castle where we planned to live together
Precious moment's in the land of never
I met her once upon a dream
Dreams can come true darling
That's what they say
Prove that you're real
And it's my lucky day

Once, once upon a dream I met her
Never, never thought we'd be together forever
Riding on our dreams

I met her
Once upon a dream

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Billy Fury's song "Once Upon A Dream" are about a dream the singer had where he met a woman. He can't seem to forget her, even though it happened long ago in the dream world. In the dream, they built a castle where they planned to live together and had precious moments in the land of never. The singer believes that dreams can come true and asks the woman to prove that she's real, and then it will be his lucky day. Although the singer never thought they would be together forever, they rode off into the sunset, fulfilling their dreams.

The song's lyrics are based on the idea of a dream world, which is a state of consciousness in which a person's thoughts, actions, and perceptions are affected by images, sounds, and feelings that are not necessarily grounded in reality. Dreams function as an emotional outlet, allowing the mind to work through ideas and problems that cannot be easily expressed in waking life. The song's dream world represents a place of boundless possibility, where anything can happen, and hope springs eternal.

"Once Upon a Dream" was written by Ben Raleigh and Bernie Wayne for the 1960 film "Sleeping Beauty." The song was performed by Mary Costa, who voiced Princess Aurora in the film. Billy Fury's version was released as a single in 1962 and became a top-five hit in the UK. The song was later covered by Elvis Presley, who recorded it in 1968 for his movie "Live a Little, Love a Little." In the film, Presley performs the song while dressed in a white jumpsuit and accompanied by a group of dancers.

As an American I had never heard of Billy Fury until I visited England way back then. I heard "Once upon a dream", loved it, bought it, and have whistled it to myself all the decades since then. Sadly, he was never known here. As a country we missed the boat with this great guy and singer.

It's an absolute shame he wasn't as well known, totally underrated. But at the same time, I think anybody that knows and loves Billy Fury today, are some of the coolest people out there.

farpointgamingdirect

I have always loved 60s British rock; it was so much better than what we Americans were putting out at the time

PAT GAVIGAN

@farpointgamingdirect It greatly revitalized American music. A great time to be young.
