Born in Hope Valley, Rhode Island, with his parents Mr. & Mrs. William Gilman Jr., Gilman first received notice as a performer at age seven, attracting the attention of a local vocal coach, Angela Bacari, who later became his manager. Eventually he met with Ray Benson (of Asleep at the Wheel) who helped him record demos, including "Roly Poly". Two months later he was signed by Sony Music Nashville.
His 2000 debut album, One Voice, had a very widely-played single that crossed over well into top 40 airplay. The album reached multi-platinum status, and earned a Grammy nomination. Generally touted as a child prodigy, Gilman appeared on various talk shows. Classic Christmas (which was certified gold) was released later in the year.
He released Dare to Dream (certified gold) on Sony BMG Music Entertainment/Epic Records in 2001, and in 2003 released Music Through Heartsongs, an album inspired by the poetry of Mattie Stepanek. Later in 2003, he performed at a benefit for The Station nightclub fire. In May 2005, he released Everything and More, his first album since his voice changed.
Billy's latest album, self-titled, was released in September 2006 on the Image Entertainment label. The first single off the upcoming album, Southern Star, heralds a return to his country music roots. Billy is scheduled to begin working on his next album with Eddie Galan and Andrew Lane of Trilogy Productions.

Do I have to go through this with you again
Cryin' on my shoulder
Whenever the nights grow colder
And you need more than another fair weather friend
Will it end before sundown
Before the prettiest girl in this town
Runs away from a showdown with me again
(Look at me now)
Come on baby, you need a rock you can't toss out
When you're under the covers
You think you're so strong
Holdin' on to me now
You know why you come around
I'm the rock you can't toss out
Don't kiss me say you're gonna miss me
Then ditch me till you come back again
Don't touch me
Tell me how much you love me
If you're not gonna love me
Like the world's gonna end
Maybe I never told you
That I want to hold you
And never wanted to be just friends
(Look at me now)
Come on baby, you need a rock you can't toss out
When you're under the covers
You think you're so strong
Holdin' on to me now
You know why you come around
I'm the rock you can't toss out
I know you want to see me
'Cause you're always at my door
Do you leave 'cause you're afraid of seeing something more
You know why you come around, look at me now,
I'm the rock you can't toss out
The song "Clueless" by Billy Gilman is a ballad that speaks about a one-sided love that is based on convenience where one of the partners always takes advantage of the other. In the first verse, the singer expresses his frustration about his partner being clueless and not understanding the depth of their relationship. He mentions how the partner keeps coming back to him every time it gets too cold, yet does not reciprocate his love fully. The singer then asks whether it will end before sunset, metaphorically referring to the end of the relationship before it even begins.
In the chorus, the singer tells his partner that she needs a rock she can't toss out, implying that he is that rock. He mentions that she always holds on to him when she's under the covers and thinks she's strong, but she always comes back to him because he is the rock she can't throw away. The second verse continues with the singer telling his partner not to pretend to love him and leave at the slightest inconvenience. He pleads with her not to touch him and say she loves him if she is not going to love him the way the world will end.
In the bridge, the singer poses a question whether his partner leaves because she's afraid of seeing something more. He then repeats the chorus, emphasizing that he is the rock his partner can't toss out. Overall, the song speaks about a relationship that only benefits one partner, who repeatedly comes back because of the convenience the other offers.

Perhaps I wasn't clear before
That I want to hold you
That I want to be more than just friends
And never wanted to be just friends
That I've always seen you as more
I know you want to see me
I can tell you want to be with me
'Cause you're always at my door
Because you keep coming back
Do you leave 'cause you're afraid of seeing something more
Are you scared of the possibility of a real relationship?
