One Voice
Billy Gilman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some kids have and some kids don't
And some of us are wondering why
Mom won't watch the news at night
There's too much stuff that's making her cry

We need some help
Down here on earth
A thousand prayers, a million words
But one voice was heard

A house, a yard, a neighborhood
Where you can ride your new bike to school
A kinda world where mom and dad
Still believe the golden rule

Life's not that simple
Down here on earth
A thousand prayers, a million words
But one voice was heard

One voice
One simple word
Hearts know what to say
One dream can change the world
Keep believing till you find your way

Yesterday while walking home
I saw some kid on Newbury Road
He pulled a pistol from his bag
And tossed it in the river below

Thanks for the help down here on earth
A thousand prayers, a million words
But one voice was heard

One voice was heard
One voice was heard

Overall Meaning

The song "One Voice" by Billy Gilman is a powerful ballad that speaks to the importance of unity, compassion, and hope in a world that can often seem divided and chaotic. The lyrics suggest that while life can be difficult and unfair, we can still find strength in coming together and speaking out against injustice. The opening lines of the song paint a picture of a world where some children have more than others, and where adults struggle to make sense of the troubling news they see on TV. Despite these challenges, the song encourages listeners to keep speaking up and believing in the power of their own voice to make a difference.

The chorus of "One Voice" emphasizes the importance of unity and collective action. By coming together and speaking out with one voice, we can create positive change in the world. The song imagines a better world where children can safely ride their bikes to school and where parents teach their children to follow the "golden rule" of treating others with kindness and respect. The final verse brings the song's message home with a powerful example of how one person's actions can have a ripple effect on the world. By throwing a gun into the river, the young boy in the song symbolizes the power of individual actions to create a safer, more peaceful world.

I sang this song for my 4th grade talent show and won first place. My name is also Billy, and this was an absolute perfect fitting song for my voice at that age. I now have a degree in music and am a music educator. This was the start of it all :)
