Born in Hope Valley, Rhode Island, with his parents Mr. & Mrs. William Gilman Jr., Gilman first received notice as a performer at age seven, attracting the attention of a local vocal coach, Angela Bacari, who later became his manager. Eventually he met with Ray Benson (of Asleep at the Wheel) who helped him record demos, including "Roly Poly". Two months later he was signed by Sony Music Nashville.
His 2000 debut album, One Voice, had a very widely-played single that crossed over well into top 40 airplay. The album reached multi-platinum status, and earned a Grammy nomination. Generally touted as a child prodigy, Gilman appeared on various talk shows. Classic Christmas (which was certified gold) was released later in the year.
He released Dare to Dream (certified gold) on Sony BMG Music Entertainment/Epic Records in 2001, and in 2003 released Music Through Heartsongs, an album inspired by the poetry of Mattie Stepanek. Later in 2003, he performed at a benefit for The Station nightclub fire. In May 2005, he released Everything and More, his first album since his voice changed.
Billy's latest album, self-titled, was released in September 2006 on the Image Entertainment label. The first single off the upcoming album, Southern Star, heralds a return to his country music roots. Billy is scheduled to begin working on his next album with Eddie Galan and Andrew Lane of Trilogy Productions.
Some Things I Know

Snow is white, and the ocean is blue
Rain is wet, and it falls from the sky
And the stars come out every night
And just as sure as the sun will rise
This love is real, you see in my eyes
Plant a seed and it will grow
There's some things in life I need
Water to drink, air to breathe
A place to rest when I need sleep
When I'm hungry, food to eat
As sure as I need the Lord above
That's how much I need her love
And I need shelter from the cold
Some things I know
There's some things in life I want
To be thankful for all I've got
A friend to talk with, a hand to hold
To still be young when I grow old
And I want all my dreams to come true
And I want to share them all with you
And I just had to tell you so
Some things I know
Oh, I just had to tell you so
There's some things I know.
Billy Gilman's song "Some Things I Know" is a beautiful tribute to life's certainties and the things that are most important to him. He first states the obvious, such as the fact that snow is white and that rain falls from the sky, but then he moves on to more profound truths. He declares that just as sure as the sun will rise, his love for someone is real and evident in his eyes. He states that planting a seed will surely lead to growth, just as the love he has for his partner will grow and flourish.
In the second verse, Gilman sings about the things in life he needs, such as air to breathe and food to eat. He compares this to the need he has for the love of his partner and the Lord. He then expresses his desire for stability and protection, a place to rest and shelter from the cold. He concludes the verse by reiterating his love and need for his partner.
The final verse speaks about the things Gilman wants in life, such as being thankful for what he already has and having someone to talk to and hold his hand. He expresses his desire for all his dreams to come true, and to share those dreams with his partner. Finally, he proclaims that he just had to tell his partner how much he knows about life and love.
Overall, Billy Gilman's "Some Things I Know" is a powerfully moving song that speaks to both the simplicity and complexity of life's certainties.
