Having worked in labs for years we would all wonder about how this was possible, it just didn't seem realistic given the work that goes into the testing process. 8.5ml of whole blood, centrifuged, will give enough serum to test about 14 or so tests.

I'm not at all surprised that she fooled as many as she did given that most ppl have no idea what happens to their blood once we draw it. Before I worked in labs I hadn't given it any consideration.

As to fooling people, most people's education is completely lacking in this area, and if someone dazzles and bullies people, they can get away with it--for a while. Not the first time I've seen such a thing in startups. They did work on some kind of fluidics and delivery system for over a half a decade but when they got to the analytic part, it was obvious it went down as it was going to go down--current technology has nothing to handle so little amount of what you need to measure.

@Mr Martin They did. If you watched at least one 10 minute documentary on her story, they all mentioned employees who knew it didn't work and interviews with them. A lot of them questioned Elizabeth saying this doesn't work. A lot quit but were too scared to tell the public. They were using other companies machines at time because they knew theirs didn't work. The quit employees once their word got out to the public that it didn't work were being followed by detectives Elizabeth hired.

I’m a physician and when I very first heard about this woman and spent a small amount of time researching, I personally was very skeptical and already had a hunch this was all BS. I think she had the intention to alter the blood testing landscape at the onset as she was deliberating leaving college, but her primary motivating desire was fame and fortune, not a deep desire to really improve people's lives. She just thought that she could be a facilitator and let the actual scientists do all the dirty work of coming up with a workable product, while she was the face of the company (the easy part) and hustled investors for money. Then she could claim credit for the product when it launched and become an overnight billionaire - all the more special because she was a woman and an ivy drop out.

But she continued her charade even when she knew there was no viable product to be had at least in the short-medium term, as that would deprive her of the attention and affluent lifestyle that she had gotten used to. The shock of having failed at a venture of such magnitude disconnected her from reality and she continued to further seek the safety of her bubble.

People like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, knew what they were selling, built things from scratch at least in the initial phase of their careers, not just peddling fantasies hoping someone else would build it for you while you had no hands on product knowledge other than marketing gimmicks.

Just because I recognize there's a problem that needs solving doesn't mean that I am qualified to start and run a company to help solve that problem.

My classmates from high school also made a petition against the music teacher for the same reason, and he was not imprisoned, but fired. And he was a very nice teacher. No people like this don’t change. Some people see jail as just a resting stop, or a moment of preparation to come back more organized to get what they want, which is to extort. I’ve seen report on men that have multiple wives and con them, or a most famous case would be H-itler. Who wrote his book in jail. These peoples answers of ‘revenge’ as in ‘being knocked down and having to get back up’ shows they have no sense of true remorse. These lines might just as well be manipulation for that ‘they just don’t see it’, and didn’t ‘get it’ which is why they continue. It might as well be that they are fully aware but just risk takers who look for what they can get away it fully consciously. There is no way you would know how they feel based on an interview. Most likely the way to stop them is by the law, ethical injustice, and own gut feeling. Stay detached and keep your mental state completely in your own agency.

I’m no psychologist but that freaky scare makes me think of someone who is carefully considering what she is saying, probably an attempt to cover up lies, and not give any tells. She looks demented.

I would be surprised but happy if there is a significant jail term on the cards. It’s embarrassing for the tech community that one of their own was doing this, and that she ticked so many people out of so much money. They’ll want this to go away quietly if possible.

When she became a big thing (before any allegations of wrongdoing) I watched a few interviews with her and I told everyone I knew unabashedly that I thought she was a fraud (knowing ZERO about this scientific field). All the tell-tale signs were right there, in her speech. Everyone called me crazy, told me I was jealous of others' success and brilliance, etc. Well, not that it's a laughing matter, but who's laughing now, suckers? Honestly, I have zero sympathy for people who lose money in scams like these. If you can't figure out you're dealing with a fraudster after you've met with them (which anyone investing over $150,000 in a startup company does), then you're a horrible judge of character and thus poorly equipped for investing in startups.

The people that really knew what was going on were the technicians, but they couldn't really talk about it without violating their non-disclosure agreements. As a physician, doing dozens or hundreds of tests at once is nothing that medicine wants or needs. Testing everyone for everything is a terrible idea, because even if incredibly accurate, if done unnecessarily in tons of people with no symptoms, most of the “positive results” will be false positives, causing worry, extra tests, extra visits, biopsies, scans, etc just to show “nope, you’re fine.” Doctors actively discourage the “yearly physical” in people with no symptoms just because the chances one of the labs done will be falsely positive is much higher than the proverbial “the test caught something I didn’t know I had early and I was cured” scenario. It was a gimmick for patients, but wastes millions in healthcare every year. For example, once saw a patient who had a very high arsenic level on a “order your own lab” heavy metal screen, something that unless you work smelting metal is uneeded. He was on his third appointment to see how bad the “poisoning” was when the occ med doctor asked “did you have seafood before the test?” The answer was yes…a big plate of oysters….which gives you a false positive for arsenic. The repeat test with no seafood before was ….absolutely normal, and he spent days thinking someone was trying to potion him. For the labs to be accurate, there is a huge list of things to do or not do before them, which these “test yourself” places never mention.

I find it baffling that so many investors (especially in later years) would put so much money into Theranos without the simplest due diligence. What I would have done:
1) seek volunteers among chronically ill patients who need frequent blood tests (this excluding healthy people whose blood parameters are easy to guess anyways)
2) draw blood from each, as part of a blood test they would do anyways with a reputable lab
3) take a drop of blood from each sample and have Theranos test it anonymously and under supervision
4) compare the results
Total cost of the experiment: possibly a million. Quite reasonable if you plan to invest 100+ million.

I have personally met a couple of con artist like her, both defraud investors of millions of dollars, none to the extent of Holmes, and in the case of both people, all those that were defrauded told me that they were very charming, I never thought they were charming at all and actually two minutes into meeting them I knew how fake their personalities were and that far from being charming they were just fake. I remember telling my friends that, but they believed those two were very charming and invested a ton of money in their ideas, they ended up losing all their money. But what surprised me is how easy people can be tricked into thinking someone is charming, when it is clearly a fake personality that only wants to take advantage of them
