Imagination
Billy Higgins Ray Drummond Hank Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Imagination is funny
It makes a cloudy day sunny
Makes a bee think of honey
Just as I think of you

Imagination is crazy
Your whole perspective gets hazy
Starts you asking a daisy
What to do, what to do?

Have you ever felt
A gentle touch and then a kiss
And then and then
Find it's only your imagination again? Oh, well

Imagination is silly
You go around willy-nilly

For example I go around wanting you
And yet I can't imagine that you want me too

Overall Meaning

The song "Imagination" by Billy Higgins Ray Drummond Hank Jones, is a beautiful and whimsical ode to the power of imagination. Through the use of vivid metaphors, the song talks about how imagination can transform the most mundane of days into something magical. The song starts off with the lyrics, "Imagination is funny, It makes a cloudy day sunny, Makes a bee think of honey, Just as I think of you." Here, the song talks about how the power of imagination can make even the dreariest of days seem bright and cheerful. The lyrics compare the effect of imagination to that of honey on a bee, making it irresistibly drawn towards it.

The song goes on to describe the craziness of imagination, with the lyrics, "Imagination is crazy, Your whole perspective gets hazy, Starts you asking a daisy, What to do, what to do?" The song suggests that the power of imagination can blur the boundaries between reality and fantasy, causing confusion and even self-doubt. The song goes on to describe the silly and whimsical aspects of imagination, where desires and wishes can be played out in the mind's eye, as witnessed in the lyrics "Imagination is silly, You go around willy-nilly, For example, I go around wanting you, And yet I can't imagine that you want me too."

Overall, the song "Imagination" is a beautiful and lighthearted take on the idea of imagination as a transformative force that can make the world seem like a magical place.

Billy Higgins was such a wonderful drummer. He could play anything, at the highest level. He played in some of the most progressive bands, including with Ornette Coleman, played in blues/rock bands, was a Blue Note regular, and played brilliantly on Lee Morgan's astounding "Search for the New Land" album, one of my favorites. He was totally self-effacing behind the drums, just wanted the music to be as good as it could be. A great listener with great chops & deep musicality. It's silly to say that any of the world class musicians like these gentlemen are "better" or "greater" than other world-class musicians but Billy Higgins is the one I would have wanted to play with if I'd been a good enough musician forming a band. And he seems to have been a really lovely guy, always seemed full of joy when he was playing this great music.
