Idol began his music career in late 1976 as a guitarist in the punk rock band Chelsea. However, he soon left the group. With his former bandmate Tony James, Idol formed Generation X. With Idol as lead singer, the band achieved success in the United Kingdom and released three studio albums on Chrysalis Records, then disbanded. In 1981, Idol moved to New York City to pursue his solo career in collaboration with guitarist Steve Stevens. His debut studio album, Billy Idol (1982), was a commercial success. With music videos for singles "Dancing with Myself" and "White Wedding" Idol soon became a staple of then newly-established MTV.
Idol's second studio album, Rebel Yell (1983), was a major commercial success, featuring hit singles "Rebel Yell" and "Eyes Without a Face". The album was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipment of two million copies in the US. In 1986, he released Whiplash Smile. Having accumulated three UK top 10 singles ("Rebel Yell", "White Wedding" and "Mony Mony"), Idol released a 1988 greatest hits album titled Idol Songs: 11 of the Best; the album went platinum in the United Kingdom. Idol then released Charmed Life (1990) and the concept album Cyberpunk (1993).
Idol spent the second half of the 1990s focusing on his personal life out of the public eye. He made a musical comeback with the release of Devil's Playground (2005) and again with Kings & Queens of the Underground (2014).

(Won't) get you what you need on
The trouble crosses and then
It's only your fixes that did never fit
No one's gonna make you cry for your love life tonight
Ohhh, how do I know
It's because I believe
In a love that is so strong
If a love crush says come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on,
Yea I said come on,
Wow, I said come on
Yes like this
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on,
Yes like this
Yes, you know raving crazy to say things
I did you were sure
We don't need no panic patches some more
Look reality forbids you pin don't you feel it
No one's gonna make you fight your love life tonight
Oh no, why do I know
It's because I believe
In a love that is so strong
It's (In?) a love crush number one
(If) it's a love crush says come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on,
Yea I said come on,
Wow, I said come on
Yes like this
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on,
Yes like this
I said no, not the room at the top
I can't speed down and the pressures dropped
No longer room at the top
Oh we're gonna speed down and the pressures dropped
How do I know
It's because I believe
In a love that is so strong
It's a love crush number one
If[And that's?] a love crush says come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on
You're gonna get it tonight
You're gonna get it tonight
You're gonna get it tonight
You're gonna get it tonight
In "Come On Come On," Billy Idol is addressing a lover who seems unhappy despite all the material possessions he's given her. He tells her that these things won't bring her the happiness she's looking for, and that the only thing that will fulfill her is a true, strong love. Idol believes in this kind of love, and believes that it's what the woman needs to find happiness.
The lyrics also touch on the idea of reality and how it can prohibit an individual from chasing their dreams. Idol tells the woman that there's no need for "panic patches" and encourages her to pursue her love life with everything she's got. He believes that she can't let reality hold her back and that she needs to take the chance.
Furthermore, the chorus is an anthem of sorts, urging the woman to take the leap of faith and pursue the love that she's been longing for. The repetition of the phrase "come on" reinforces Idol's belief that a strong love is worth taking risks for.
Overall, "Come On Come On" is a call to action for those who may be hesitant or scared to take risks in their love lives. Idol's message is that it's worth it to take a chance and believe in love, even when reality might make it seem impossible.
