Idol began his music career in late 1976 as a guitarist in the punk rock band Chelsea. However, he soon left the group. With his former bandmate Tony James, Idol formed Generation X. With Idol as lead singer, the band achieved success in the United Kingdom and released three studio albums on Chrysalis Records, then disbanded. In 1981, Idol moved to New York City to pursue his solo career in collaboration with guitarist Steve Stevens. His debut studio album, Billy Idol (1982), was a commercial success. With music videos for singles "Dancing with Myself" and "White Wedding" Idol soon became a staple of then newly-established MTV.
Idol's second studio album, Rebel Yell (1983), was a major commercial success, featuring hit singles "Rebel Yell" and "Eyes Without a Face". The album was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipment of two million copies in the US. In 1986, he released Whiplash Smile. Having accumulated three UK top 10 singles ("Rebel Yell", "White Wedding" and "Mony Mony"), Idol released a 1988 greatest hits album titled Idol Songs: 11 of the Best; the album went platinum in the United Kingdom. Idol then released Charmed Life (1990) and the concept album Cyberpunk (1993).
Idol spent the second half of the 1990s focusing on his personal life out of the public eye. He made a musical comeback with the release of Devil's Playground (2005) and again with Kings & Queens of the Underground (2014).

You're calling me
For a saviour--I know
It's my destiny
So I'm gonna rise
Face the morning sun
Feel it calling me,
Believes in me
Love labours on
Love labours on
Back through time, I know
I'm a wanted man
Oh momma, I know
Gave me grace, not to lose
So I'm gonna get up--cleansed
Face the morning rain
I feel it touching me,
Healing me
Believes in me
Love labours on
Love labours on
Feel it wanting me,
Knowing me,
Believe, yeah
Love labours on
Love labours on
Ooh
Ooh
Are you wanting,
I know 'cause you're calling me, yeah
Are you needing,
Yeah 'cause you need from me
Wanting me,
Reaching me,
Wanting me,
Knowing me,
Believes in me.
Love labours on
Love labours on
Love labours on
Love labours on
Labours on
Love labours on
Love labours on
The lyrics of Billy Idol's song "Love Labours On" convey a message of hope and determination. The song seems to be focusing on moving forward despite the challenges that one may have faced in the past. From the opening line, "Back through time, I know you're calling me," Idol suggests that his destiny is not in the present but in a time that has already passed. His vocals suggest that this calling is not simply an opportunity but a responsibility - "For a savior, I know it's my destiny." Hence, performing a noble act is not just an option but an obligation in his life, reflecting his sense of purpose.
As the song progresses, the chorus "Love labours on" is repeated multiple times throughout the song emphasizing the significance of love in moving forward. The use of the phrase "love labours on" is the ultimate expression of fortitude, perseverance, and resilience in the face of adversity. The tone is one of quiet acceptance, recognition that whatever kind of challenge he's facing - whether it is a missed opportunity or a difficult situation- he acknowledges it, and, more importantly, that he will overcome it. The song stringently conveys the idea of a determined will to exist, delving deep into the human spirit.
Overall, Billy Idol's "Love Labours On" is a song that speaks to the human spirit, the need to have purpose in life and move forward with hope, and the significance of love. It is a song of admiration, courage, and perseverance that inspires and shines as the ultimate force within us.
