Idol began his music career in late 1976 as a guitarist in the punk rock band Chelsea. However, he soon left the group. With his former bandmate Tony James, Idol formed Generation X. With Idol as lead singer, the band achieved success in the United Kingdom and released three studio albums on Chrysalis Records, then disbanded. In 1981, Idol moved to New York City to pursue his solo career in collaboration with guitarist Steve Stevens. His debut studio album, Billy Idol (1982), was a commercial success. With music videos for singles "Dancing with Myself" and "White Wedding" Idol soon became a staple of then newly-established MTV.
Idol's second studio album, Rebel Yell (1983), was a major commercial success, featuring hit singles "Rebel Yell" and "Eyes Without a Face". The album was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipment of two million copies in the US. In 1986, he released Whiplash Smile. Having accumulated three UK top 10 singles ("Rebel Yell", "White Wedding" and "Mony Mony"), Idol released a 1988 greatest hits album titled Idol Songs: 11 of the Best; the album went platinum in the United Kingdom. Idol then released Charmed Life (1990) and the concept album Cyberpunk (1993).
Idol spent the second half of the 1990s focusing on his personal life out of the public eye. He made a musical comeback with the release of Devil's Playground (2005) and again with Kings & Queens of the Underground (2014).
New Future Weapon

You can press my button and see
Faster than a mach 5 I can make you bleed
I'm self-undercover you wont even know I'm there
I can kill all of you you better beware
[Chorus]
Its the dawn of the new future weapon
Its the prime speed and violence of action
I'm at the controls
Yes at the controls
Higher than a mile
My weaponology
I can take you out there
With pin point accuracy
Riding in a raptor
Danger to the max
Shoot if you flying by
With the power of my attack
[Chorus]
Living in this present
Living this lie
The air you breathe is a poisonous fire
The sounds you hear destroy the tune
The sounds you hear destroy...
With a hundred and eighty miles
You can press my button and see
Faster than a mach 5 I can make you bleed
[Chorus: x2]
[Repeat: x2]
I'm at the controls
I'm after your soul
The lyrics to Billy Idol's song "New Future Weapon" are about the power and destruction of a new technological weapon. The song is written from the perspective of the weapon itself, boasting its capabilities and warning its enemies to beware. The first verse suggests that the weapon can be operated from a distance of 180 miles and can cause rapid bleeding, faster than the speed of sound. The chorus states that this is the beginning of a new era of weaponry and that the weapon is after the souls of its enemies, with the singer boasting that he is in control.
The second verse continues to describe the weapon, saying it can reach high altitudes and hit targets with extreme accuracy. The singer references riding in a raptor, indicating that this weapon is not a traditional one, but perhaps a drone or missile. The bridge of the song suggests that the present is filled with lies and destruction, making the weapon's power more appealing. The song ends with the singer repeating that he is in control, and he is after the souls of his enemies.
Overall, the lyrics to "New Future Weapon" explore the destructive nature of new technology and the perceived power that comes along with it. The song uses a dystopian theme to warn about the potential consequences of unchecked technological advancement.
