52nd Street
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They say it takes a lot to keep a love alive:
In every heart there pumps a different beat

But if we shift the rhythm into overdrive,
We could generate a lot of heat....

CHORUS
On 52nd Street
On 52nd Street

We're gonna throw a little soul parade,
Before they know the second bar was played

We're gonna slip it to 'em short and sweet

CHORUS

Overall Meaning

In Billy Joel's song "52nd Street," he speaks to the difficulty of keeping a love alive, acknowledging that each person has their own rhythm pumping within their heart. He suggests that shifting that rhythm into overdrive could generate a lot of heat, the implication being that both parties need to work together to keep the love going strong. The emphasis on rhythm throughout the song is fitting, as it takes two people working in sync to maintain a healthy and thriving relationship.

The chorus of the song highlights the location, 52nd Street, which was known for its jazz clubs in the 1930s and 40s. Joel imagines throwing a "little soul parade" on this street and slipping a short and sweet message to onlookers. This can be interpreted as a metaphor for the relationship itself; both parties must work to keep the love fresh and exciting, while also communicating clearly and efficiently. The phrase "before they know the second bar was played" suggests that the love should move quickly and intensely, catching others off guard and exciting them with its energy.

A family friend gave 52nd Street to me for a birthday present in 1978. I thought at the time as a 13 year old, he didn't put much thought into that present and he doesn't really know me. This friend passed away from cancer not long after and little did I know that this album would trigger my admiration for Billy Joel and he is still one of my favourite artists. Thank you and RIP friend. It was one of the best presents I've ever received. I just didn't know it at the time.

Thank you for sharing this thought, John Ossio! I-too-was 13 when I purchased Billy Joel's "52'nd Street" album-in November, 1978-in Houston, Texas!

I truely love you, my soul brother from far away. You just totaled me with your story. My story has many similarities to yours
I was also 13, the year was 1983, I had my own money for the first time. I joined my father and one of his friends on a trip to town (not for the first time, that bit was since I was a baby). The only song by Billy Joel I knew was My Life. I knew many other artists but for some reason I chose 52nd Street as the first album I have ever bought by myself. I had good musical education (from every day life, music was and still is life's fuel for me) but Billy's 52nd was my first purchase. It was a cassete.
That friend of my father, a funny and kind man also died from cancer, but it was some 30 years later. As it is for you, Billy Joel and this album is among my favorites, i.e. in my opinion it is one of the best albums ever made. In general.
Thank you for sharing you story. I hope you will read my comment some day.
Peace
