Ain
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You got to open your eyes in the morning
Nine o'clock comin' with out any warnin'
And you gotta get ready to go
You say you went out late last evenin'
Did a lot of drinkin'
Come home stinkin'
And you went and fell asleep on the floor
And then your lady comes and finds you asleepin'
Starts in to weepin' 'bout the hours you been keepin'
And you better get your ass out the door

Ain't no crime
Say everybody gets that way some time
Ain't no crime
You know it's good to get it on to get a load off your mind
Oh no, it ain't no crime. Oh.

You got to open your eyes in the morning
Nine o'clock comin' with out any warnin'
And you gotta get ready to go
Well now you tell me you love somebody
And you'll love 'em forever
You may love 'em forever
But you won't like 'em all of the time
Well now you tell me you need somebody for the rest of your life
You might have somebody
But you won't want 'em everyday

Ain't no crime
Say ev'rybody gets that way some time
Ain't no crime
Well it's just human nature
Happens all the time
Oh no, it ain't no crime. Oh

And just as surely as the wind keeps blowin'
The grass keeps growin'
You gotta keep goin'

And the Lord have mercy on your soul
La, la la la.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Billy Joel's "Ain't No Crime" portray the theme of personal freedom and the need for occasional escapism. This song is a lighthearted take on the consequences of indulgence and the responsibilities that come with it. It begins with the mundane aspect of life, getting up early in the morning to face a new day. It further describes a situation where someone has had too much to drink and falls asleep on the floor, and when the partner finds out, there's an argument. The chorus says that there is no harm in what has been done, and everyone needs to let loose every once in a while to get some peace of mind.

In the second verse, the song discusses the complexity of relationships. The singer points out that love and like do not always go together, and although someone might love someone forever, it doesn't mean they will like them all the time. It also shows that while people might want a partner for the rest of their lives, they may not want them every day. Hence, there's no need to feel guilty about wanting time alone. The final verse sings about how life goes on, whether we like it or not, and we have to keep moving forward.

Overall, "Ain't No Crime" is a reminder that it's okay to take a break, and it's okay not to want someone all the time. It's essential to take care of ourselves and enjoy life while we can.

THIS SONG WAS MEANING NOW MORE THAN IT EVER HAD BACK IN THE DAY

@kansasisaband

It was 1982. First year at Arizona State University. My roommate Dave discovers Billy is playing at the little venue there on campus at ASU. First time I ever saw him live and it was this tiny venue at ASU. After that "Nylon Curtain" tour, I have seen Billy over a dozen times live. You never forget your first. I remember running out and buying the "Piano Man" cassette tape after the tour to play in my Sony Walkman, of course! :-)

You're speaking my language!
