Back In The U.S.S.R
Billy Joel Lyrics

Oh, flew in from Miami Beach B.O.A.C.
Didn't get to bed last night
On the way the paper bag was on my knee
Man I had a dreadful flight
I'm back in the U.S.S.R.
You don't know how lucky you are boy
Back in the U.S.S.R. (Yeah)
Been away so long I hardly knew the place
Gee it's good to be back home
Leave it till tomorrow to unpack my case
Honey disconnect the phone
I'm back in the U.S.S.R.
You don't know how lucky you are boy
Back in the U.S.
Back in the U.S.
Back in the U.S.S.R.

Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the West behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
That Georgia's always on my mind

Aw come on!
Ho yeah!
Ho yeah!
Ho ho yeah!
Yeah yeah!

Yeah I'm back in the U.S.S.R.
You don't know how lucky you are boys
Back in the U.S.S.R.

Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the West behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
That Georgia's always on my mind

Oh, show me around your snow-peaked mountains way down south
Take me to your daddy's farm
Let me hear your balalaika's ringing out
Come and keep your comrade warm
I'm back in the U.S.S.R.
Hey you don't know how lucky you are boys
Back in the U.S.S.R.

Oh let me tell you, honey
Hey, I'm back!
I'm back in the U.S.S.R.
Yes, I'm free!
Yeah, back in the U.S.S.R.

Overall Meaning

In Billy Joel's song Back In The U.S.S.R., the singer is describing returning to the Soviet Union after a bad flight from Miami Beach. Despite the difficulties of the journey, the singer is excited to be back and suggests that others don't appreciate the privilege of living in the country. The singer comments on the differences between Soviet culture and Western culture, particularly in regards to women. The singer expresses his fondness for the women in both Ukraine and Moscow. He also suggests a desire for a romantic connection with one of the women in the USSR, asking to be taken to her father's farm and suggesting that they keep each other warm.

The lyrics of Back In The U.S.S.R. were written by Paul McCartney and were partially influenced by Chuck Berry's song Back In The U.S.A. and The Beach Boys' single California Girls. The song was included in the highly influential album The Beatles or The White Album, which was released in 1968. The album was one of the most experimental collections of music that The Beatles ever released and featured a wide array of sounds and styles.

I saw this video in 1987, and it was the first time I'd seen the Russian people...not the soldiers or the stereotype images from Rocky IV. I thought "Wow, they're just like us" It's good to see that the Iron Curtain is no more.
