I've Loved These Days
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now we take our time
So nonchalant
And spend our nights
So bon vivant
We dress our days
In silken robes
The money comes
The money goes
We know it's all a passing phase

We light our lamps
For atmosphere
And hang our hopes
On chandeliers
We're going long
We're gaining weight
We're sleeping long
And far too late
And so it's times
To change our ways
But I've loved these days

Now as we indulge
In things refined
We hide our hearts
From harder times
A string of pearls
A foreign car
Oh we can only go so far
On caviar and Cabernay

We drown our doubts
In dry champagne
And soothe our souls
With fine cocaine
I don't know why I ever care
We'll get so high
And get nowhere
We'll have to change our jaded ways
But I've loved these days

So before we end
And then begin
We'll drink a toast to how it's been
A few more hours to be complete
A few more nights on satin sheets

A few more times that I can say
I've loved these days

Overall Meaning

In the song "I've Loved These Days," Billy Joel contemplates the fleeting nature of life while enjoying the indulgences of wealth and luxury. He describes a life of nonchalance, where the days are spent in robes of silk and the nights are filled with bouts of elegance. The money comes and goes, but it’s all just a temporary phase. Joel notes the luxuries that have become commonplace in his life - hanging hopes on chandeliers and dressing up his surroundings to create a particular atmosphere. He speaks of a life filled with excess, gaining weight, sleeping late, and staying up late.

Joel acknowledges that their indulgences are a vicarious distraction from realities that haunt him - a need to escape the harsher realities of life. The illusion of luxury does not stretch far, and the string of pearls and foreign car can only take a certain distance. He recognizes that while they may try, champagne and cocaine can't replace true satisfaction. However, he admits that he is content with the present and that he has loved these days.

The end of the song presents a celebratory tone, recognising the good moments of life and what will be lost with its passing. Joel acknowledges the impermanence of life and enjoys the moment before it slips away. "I've Loved These Days" is a bittersweet celebration of the good days in life, acknowledging that one cannot hold on to the past, but we can appreciate it.

I have never been a follower of Billy Joel, so when I heard this song during one of the best Billions episodes, I was totally blown away. Lyrics mean nothing to me because I treat the human voice as just another instrument. And what Mr. Joel did during this song was magnificent. Pitch-perfect... vabratically enthralling... an instrument as pure and enrapturing as any I've ever heard. Absolutely wonderful. Thank you, Billy Loel!
