I Don't Want to Be Alone
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She said she'd meet me in the bar
At the Plaza hotel
Wear a jacket and a tie
What's the occasion
She just smiled and she wouldn't say why
So here I am standing waiting in the lobby
Sweating bullets in this stupid old suit
And when she sees me, she busts out laughing
You're a sad sight honey but you look so cute, and

I don't want to be alone anymore
I was checking you out
I was just making sure
No, I don't want to be alone anymore
And I want you tonight
Although you hurt me before
It didn't matter that I felt like a fool
'Cause I forgot when she walked through the door
I said I'm sorry but she said it was cool
And I don't want to be alone anymore

It's so confusing choosing sides
In the heat of the moment
Just to see if it's real
It's so erotic having you
Tell me how it should feel
But I'm avoiding all the hard cold facts
That I've got to face
So ask me just one question
When this magic night is through
Could it have been just anyone
Or did it have to be you
And will you still be saying

I don't want to be alone anymore
I was checking you out
I was just making sure
No, I don't want to be alone anymore
And I want you tonight
Although you hurt me before
It didn't matter that I felt like a fool
'Cause I forgot when she walked through the door
I said I'm sorry but she said it was cool
And I don't want to be alone anymore

But don't you know that it's wrong
It's wrong, it's wrong
But like the song
Being caught by the wink of an eye
I can't be sure we'll get along
But I'm willing to try
As long as you can tell me

I don't want to be alone anymore
I was checking you out
I was just making sure
No, no, no, I don't want to be alone anymore
And I want you tonight
Although you hurt me before
It didn't matter that I felt like a fool
I forgot when she walked through the door
I said I'm sorry but she said it was cool
And I don't want to be alone anymore
I don't want to be alone anymore

And I don't want to be alone anymore
Oh, ooh ooh

Overall Meaning

The song "I Don't Want to Be Alone" by Billy Joel is essentially a love song about a man who has been hurt before but is willing to try again with the woman he is into. The lyrics describe the man waiting for the woman at a hotel lobby and feeling nervous and anxious in his suit when she finally arrives, but her presence makes him forget all of his fears. Although he is hesitant and unsure about whether the relationship will work out, he is willing to try again and take a risk because he doesn't want to be alone anymore.

In the chorus, the man explains that he was checking the woman out to make sure she was right for him and that he doesn't want to be alone anymore. Despite feeling hurt in the past and not being sure whether things will work out, he is willing to take the risk of pursuing her for the opportunity to be happy and not alone. The second verse of the song highlights the tension and confusion that often comes with starting a new relationship, as the man is unsure about how to navigate the situation and avoid getting hurt again. Ultimately, the song is about taking the chance of finding love even if it means opening yourself up to the possibility of being hurt.

I discovered Billy Joel from my dad and mom. I love him. He wasn't my favorite. I was watching MSA (My Story Animated) videos and heard about this song. So I looked up the lyrics and put by Billy Joel and this song popped up. I like it but it isn't one of my all time favorite Billy Joel songs. My tip favorite Billy Joel songs are

1) My Life
2) We Didn't Start the Fire
3) Big Shot
4) Uptown Girl
5) Keep the Faith
6) The Entertainer
7) Piano Man
