Light as the Breeze
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She stands before you naked
You can see it, you can taste it
But she comes to you
Light as the breeze
You can drink or you can nurse it
It don't matter how you worship
As long as you're
Down on your knees

So I knelt there at the delta
At the alpha and the omega
At the cradle of the river
And the seas
And like a blessing come from heaven,
For something like a second,
I was healed, and my heart
Was at ease

O baby I waited
So long for your kiss
For something to happen
Oh, something like this

And you're weak and you're harmless
And you're sleeping in you harness
And the wind going wild
In the trees
And it's not exactly prison
But you'll never be forgiven
For whatever you've done
With the keys

O baby I waited
So long for your kiss
For something to happen
Oh, something like this

It's dark and it's snowing
Oh my love I must be going
The river is starting to freeze
And I'm sick of pretending
I'm broken from bending
I've lived too long
On my knees

And she dances so graceful
And your heart's hard and hateful
And she's naked
But that's just a tease
And you turn in disgust
From your hatred and from your love
And she comes to you
Light as the breeze

O baby I waited
So long for your kiss
For something to happen
Oh, something like this

There's blood on every bracelet
You can see it, you can taste it
And it's please baby
Please baby please
And she says, drink deeply, pilgrim
But don't forget there's still a woman
Beneath this
Resplendent chemise

So I knelt there at the delta
At the alpha and omega
I knelt there
Like one who believes
And like a blessing come from heaven
For something like a second
I was cured, and my heart
Was at ease

O baby I waited
So long for your kiss

For something to happen
Oh, something like this

Overall Meaning

In "Light as the Breeze," Billy Joel paints a vivid picture of a situation where a woman is completely vulnerable and exposed in front of a man. The woman "stands before you naked," yet she is so light and delicate that she is "light as the breeze." Joel's lyrics suggest that the woman has a certain power over the man who is captivated by her beauty and grace. The two indulge in a sexual encounter, which is portrayed as a spiritual experience where the man feels healed and at peace.

Throughout the song, Joel touches upon several themes such as the power dynamics between men and women, submission, forgiveness, and self-discovery. There is a sense of ambiguity in these lyrics as the listener is left to interpret the story from their own perspective. Is the woman a victim, or is she willingly allowing the man to take advantage of her? There is no clear answer, and that adds to the beauty of Joel's lyrical genius.

In terms of musical composition, "Light as the Breeze" features a slow, moody, and atmospheric instrumental arrangement that complements the somber and reflective lyrics. The song is a testament to Billy Joel's storytelling prowess, where he uses vivid imagery and clever metaphors to create an evocative and memorable piece of music.

I'm so in love...I love Billy joel, and I have never heard this before today....how did I go my life and never hear this beautiful song. just can't stop listening to it...

@seanscanlon9067

I know that I am answering this seven years later lol but maybe it is because Billy's cover of the song appeared on a Leonard Cohen tribute album called Tower Of Song - The Songs Of Leonard Cohen from 1995, where various artists covered Cohen's songs.

It does also appear as one of three bonus tracks on Billy's Greatest Hits III album too.

@robertalantickle160

Even though he's dead, the legend of Leonard Cohen will continue to grow. This song, so perfectly written by Cohen, and so beautifully performed by Billy Joel will be part of the reason.

@tristantzara68

The emotions generated by Leonard poems are hard to beat. The voice of Billy Joel disolve any resistance of not inhaling it to our deepest core. An amazing love
