Lullaby
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Goodnight, my angel
Time to close your eyes
And save these questions for another day
I think I know what you've been asking me
I think you know what I've been trying to say
I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Wherever you may go
No matter where you are
I never will be far away

Goodnight, my angel
Now it's time to sleep
And still so many things I want to say
Remember all the songs you sang for me
When we went sailing on an emerald bay
And like a boat out on the ocean
I'm rocking you to sleep
The water's dark and deep
Inside this ancient heart
You'll always be a part of me

Lu-lu-lu-lu-lu-lu
lu-lu-lu-lu-lu-lu-lu-lu-lu

Goodnight, my angel
Now it's time to dream
And dream how wonderful your life will be
Someday your child may cry
And if you sing this lullabye
Then in your heart
There will always be a part of me

Someday we'll all be gone

But lullabyes go on and on
They never die
That's how you
And I
Will be

Overall Meaning

The song "Lullabye" by Billy Joel is a masterpiece that speaks about a parent's love for their child. It's a soothing and comforting song that uses metaphors of sailing and the ocean to convey the message that the bond between a parent and their child is unbreakable, no matter where they are. The first verse reassures the child that the parent will always be close and that they need not worry but save their questions for another day.

The second verse talks about memories of the past, specifically singing songs while sailing on an emerald bay. The parent says that just like a boat out on the ocean, they will keep rocking their child to sleep in their heart forever. In the last verse, the parent tells their child to dream of a wonderful life and assures them that even if they are not there, the love will never fade, and the lullaby will continue.

Overall, "Lullabye" is a poignant and tender song that shows the depth of a parent's unconditional love for their children.

A very beautiful song. And nobody sings it better than Billy Joel.

After I spoke at my daughter's wedding, I had the DJ play this song, surprising my daughter.

Prior to her wedding I had suffered two heart attacks. The second putting me in cardic-arrest, and a coma.

These were not due to smoking, eating badly, or drinking. It was stress, honest. Life will do that.

So, when I heard this song it meant so much to me as a message for her.

I thank you Billy Joel, from a fellow Long Islander.

My daddy sang this to all five of us kids. He was killed October 5th 2010 at just 42 years old. We played it at his funeral and I finally understood the meaning of it that day. On his headstone it says “Some day we’ll all be gone but lullabies go on and on.” I was just 16 when he was taken from me. Now I just rocked my very own son to sleep to this song. I love you daddy you’re always in my heart!💜

@dsmith7189

I'm so sorry. My dad died at 39 and my brother killed 4 years later at 17. I think I know a bit of what you're feeling. Hold on to those memories and cherish that son. I, too, was blessed with one a year later. Much love.

Such a sad loss but you had the gift of a very loving Father

@alenecali5093

@@user-mu7bz6lr1j absolutely the greatest gift was loving parents! after my daddy passed away us siblings used to say we were robbed but one day after enough healing, i realized i was never robbed, in fact we hit the jackpot with our father. his life was cut short but i dont have one bad memory of my daddy and my siblings dont either! thats pretty dang lucky if you ask me, considering some have never met their father or only have terrible memories. I thank God for my daddy and his life no matter if it was cut short.

Could not agree more. We buried my dad this morning and Billy Joel was one of his favorites - we played this song as an integral part of his service.
