My Journey's End
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I climb the highest mountain
And I swim the deepest sea
If I knew you were riding at my journey's end

And waiting for me I'll be there, I know that you'll love me
I know whatever that you'll say and I go anyway
If I knew you were waiting there at my journey's end
Now I may travel the end of the earth
But it really doesn't matter what I say
I'll come back someday

Now I know someone who's telling and I said now that it makes
If I knew you were there at my journey's end
To be mine for the rest of my day

But now it really doesn't matter
How many days I may spend
'Cause I go anywhere if I knew you were waiting there
At my journey's end

Whoa oh oh, at my journey's end
Oh oh oh oh, at my journey's end

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Billy Joel's song "My Journey's End" express the singer's willingness to travel any distance and overcome any obstacle in order to reach the person they love. The opening lines, "Well I climb the highest mountain / And I swim the deepest sea," suggest an almost superhuman determination. The repetition of the phrase "If I knew you were waiting there at my journey's end" reinforces the idea that the singer's motivation is solely the love they feel for this person.

The lines "Now I may travel the end of the earth / But it really doesn't matter what I say / I'll come back someday" reveal a hint of uncertainty, as if the singer understands the improbability of their quest but is committed nonetheless. The final stanza, in which the singer declares that "it really doesn't matter / How many days I may spend / 'Cause I'd go anywhere if I knew you were waiting there / At my journey's end," is both romantic and poignant. The repetition of the phrase "at my journey's end" throughout the song supports the idea that love is a journey, and that ultimately finding the right person is worth any amount of hardship.

Overall, "My Journey's End" is a contemplative and lyrically powerful ballad that speaks to the human desire for connection and commitment.

Not My Cup Of Tea

The first song he ever wrote, and I believe the one that inspired his last song in his career, "Famous Last Words". Always so fascinating to hear songs like it.

José Ocanto

This was the first song written by Billy Joel.

@Leftmont Rimose sounds like the Everly Brothers in the late 50's 😀

Mac's Records

The story goes that The Lost Souls actually managed to get signed to a record deal (Mercury Records) in late-1965, but it was then pulled for unknown reasons midway through the band's recording sessions while the tapes sat in the vaults for years. According to the liner notes My Lives, this song and "Time And Time Again" (the other Lost Souls song on the CD) were the only songs that survived.

Not My Cup Of Tea

It's a very cute song, that's for sure. My best friend compared it to something you'd hear in an old fashioned ice cream parlor and I think she hit it right on the nose. I perfect description. I wonder how things would've been if this album was ever released

For a 15 year old, this is actually pretty good!
