Souvenirs
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A picture postcard
A folded stub
A program of the play
File away your photographs
Of your holiday

And your mementos
Will turn to dust
But that's the price you pay
For every year's a souvenir
That slowly fades away

Every year's a souvenir
That slowly fades away

Overall Meaning

In Billy Joel's song "Souvenir," the lyrics describe how we hold on to mementos from our experiences, like picture postcards, folded stubs, and programs of events we attended. These are physical representations of memories that we keep in order to hold onto a moment in time that was special. Although these souvenirs may eventually turn to dust, they are a price we pay for the passing of time. Every year that goes by is another precious moment, but it also diminishes the significance of those past experiences. However, even as they fade away, they're still worth keeping and cherishing.

This song is a reminder that while we will never be able to revisit moments in the same way as we did when they were happening, we can always look back on our souvenirs and remember the happiness, joy, excitement, and love that we felt. It’s interesting to note that this message in "Souvenir" is something that Joel himself strongly believes in, as he's talked about how he constantly looks back on his own memories, as well as his work, with a sense of nostalgia.

This album was underrated, by Billy Joel, himself!

He felt the pressure from the record label, to rush to market a follow-up to his huge hit, "Piano Man."

It's sad that he didn't recognize his own genius, during his creative prime.

Lennon & McCartney rushed out their first few albums, with a stellar percentage of classic hits.

It's also true that great artists always think they could've done better, if given more time.

This piano melody at the beginning (and at the end) is one of the most beautiful melody ever in my life. It gives me so many feelings. How is that possible

I think it's from Liszt consolation no. 3

The Instrumental

It's actually from Chopin's "Raindrop" prelude. Anyway this whole album has great piano in it.

Phyxius

Hauntingly beautiful

All "Souvenirs" and the Chopin "Rainbow" Prelude have in common are the first 3 notes.

... there's, the mystery, Alby. And, the magic ...

"Every year's a souvenir that slowly fades away." Sad, but somehow comforting. Happy birthday to Billy Joel. This is a perfect example of quality over quantity. Excellent stuff 👍

Alamos James--- Alamos...I was just looking through old..well, momentos, and came across all the tickets (folded stubs) from the Billy Joel concerts I've been to...and they ARE fading away...crumbling. As I looked at them THIS song came into my head and I started crying right on the damn things. Then I had to come here and listen to it again...and read some comments from people who get it...Be Well.

This song always reminds me of my life with my late wife. She's been gone 14 years and I still miss her every day. Sorry, Billy Joel, but the memories don't "slowly fade away."
