Storm Front
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Safe at harbor, everything is easy
Off to starboard, daylight comes up fast
Now I'm restless for the open water
Red flags are flying fromhe Coast Guard mast
They told me to stay, I heard all the information
I motored away and steered straight ahead
Though the weatherman said
CHORUS
There's a storm front coming (mood indigo)
White water running and the pressure is low
Storm front coming (mood indigo)
Small craft warning on the radio

I've been sailing a long time on this ocean
Man gets lonesome, all those years at sea
I've got a woman, my life should be easy
Most men hunger for the life I lead
The morning was gray, but I had the motivation
I drifted away and ran into more
Heavy weather off shore

CHORUS

We've got a low pressure system and a northeast breeze
We've got a falling barometer and rising seas
We've got the cumulonimbus and a possible gale
We've got a force nine blowing on the Beaufort scale

I'm still restless for the open water
Though she gives me everything I need
She asked me to stay, but I'd done my navigation
I drove her away, but I should have known
To stay tied up at home

CHORUS

Overall Meaning

In Billy Joel's song "Storm Front," the lyrics describe the internal struggle of a man who is torn between his love for the sea and his love for a woman. The opening lines of the song depict a sense of ease as the singer is safe in the harbor, but his restlessness begins to take hold, and he yearns for the open water. Despite the warnings from the Coast Guard mast, he decides to steer ahead into the storm, likening it to a "mood indigo." The chorus of the song highlights the impending danger of the storm, including white water and low pressure, with a small craft warning on the radio.

As the song progresses, the singer reflects on his life as a sailor and how he has been sailing for a long time on the ocean. He notes that man becomes lonesome after years at sea and that he has a woman who makes his life easy, yet he still longs for the open water. The lyrics also show how the man realizes that he should have stayed tied up at home while battling the heavy weather off-shore.

Overall, the song "Storm Front" is metaphorical in its depiction of the internal struggle of the singer. It depicts how challenging it can be to choose between two loves: the open sea and a companion. The song is a reminder that we all face storms in life, and sometimes we need to make tough decisions.

Such an underrated song

James Fogarty

Yep the best Billy Joel album in my opinion

Vincent H.

@James Fogarty agreed for me it's this and Glass Houses as his best. The Stranger is a masterpiece don't get me wrong but it's waaaaay overrated by fans. He has so many under-the-radar classics.

Bradley Cohen

No it's not..Every billy joel song is equal to all his others...he is the best..living legend...and wayyy ahead of his time...no song of his is under-rated, most just can't understand what a human he is...I believe in Billy joel

This song should have been on the greatest hits album

This song was playing when the original cassette broke the tape deck in my old Thunderbird. Still love the song, and it's a funny memory too, since it happened in the middle of a rain storm!

@Gary Carr This would have been in 2001 or so.

Aramis419

I wore out my cassette during Hurricane Floyd, back in '99!

Brandon Hampton

I always loved how the first beat of the song (like they gave the beat a reverse effect). Always tripped me out as a kid. This album was a change for Joel and difficult to record, which made it so successful. He changed most of his lineup to change the energy and it was damn good!
