Surprises
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't get excited
Don't say a word
Nobody noticed
Nothing was heard
It was committed discreetly
It was handled so neatly
And it shouldn't surprise you at all
You know
Break all the records
Burn the cassettes
I'd be lying if I told you
That I had no regrets
There were so many mistakes
And what a difference it makes
But still it shouldn't surprise you at all
You know
I said it shouldn't surprise you at all
You know
Don't look now but you have changed
Your best friends wouldn't tell you
Now it's apparent
Now it's a fact
So marshal your forces
For another attack
You were so young and naive
I know it's hard to believe
But now it shouldn't surprise you at all
You know
No it shouldn't surprise you at all
You know
What has it cost you
What have you won
The sins of the fathers
Are the sins of the sons
It was always within you
It will always continue
But it shouldn't surprise you at all
You know

I said it shouldn't surprise you at all
You know

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Billy Joel's song "Surprises" speak to the inevitability of mistakes and their consequences, even suggesting that some of these consequences are to be expected. The first verse tells a story of a discreet action that went unnoticed, but the second stanza immediately acknowledges regret and the recognition of past mistakes. The chorus includes the repeated refrain that these consequences shouldn't be surprising, and the third verse brings up the idea that these consequences can be passed down through generations.

Throughout the lyrics, there is a sense of resignation and understanding that mistakes and consequences are natural parts of life. As the chorus repeats, "It shouldn't surprise you at all," it's as if Billy Joel is telling the listener not to resist or be shocked by the consequences of their actions, but rather to accept them as a natural part of life. Even the line "Your best friends wouldn't tell you" acknowledges the difficulty of seeing oneself clearly and objectively, but still insists that the truth should not come as a surprise.

Overall, the song seems to suggest a kind of comfort in accepting the inevitability of mistakes and consequences. While it may be difficult to face the truth and acknowledge the pain and regrets that come with our actions, it is ultimately freeing to accept them and move forward.

This whole album is so underrated. The whole Beatles sound that he captured is amazing! I love this song. It's hard for me to pick a favorite album of Billy's because I love them all, but he's said that this one is his favorite and I can definitely see why.

@decacards5250

Billy probably had John Lennon in his thoughts because of his tragic murder a year previously.

@cellini051

Deca Cards52 It's funny you say that because I just recently got a Rolling Stone magazine from 1982 and there's an interview with Billy in it. He said he had no idea he sounded like John Lennon until after he played the album back and listened to it. And he said exactly what you said, it was because of John's death. So crazy!

Chilling stuff..the whole album is classic...could listen to this song on a loop..Beatles in there but he makes it so vital....Joel is so good its ridiculous...he was so lucky with that band too.

I love the darkness, moodiness and solitude this album conveys. Truly an album that can really keep you company. I can feel the loneliness, and I like it!

Saw him live on this tour. The drums were impeccable, both here and live. Great production!

@mundlen

For me this was the best album Joel ever recorded. I was a senior in HS and every song spoke volumes...then and now...big thanks!!

@calmblueocean7243

Agreed, I was in junior high then and heard it again for the first time today.... mind blown!
