The Ballad Of Billy The Kid
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

From a town known as Wheeling, West Virginia
Rode a boy with a six gun in his hand
And his daring life of crime
made him a legend in his time
east and west of the Rio Grande.

Well he started with a bank in Colorado
in the pocket of his vest, a Colt he hid
and his age and his size
took the teller by surprise
and, the word spread of Billy the kid

Well he never travelled heavy
yes he always rode alone
and he soon put many older guns to shame
and he never had a sweetheart
and he never had a home
but the cowboy and the rancher knew his name

Well he robbed his way from Utah to Oklahoma
and the largest could not seem to track him down
and it served his legend well
For the folks they loved to tell about
When Billy the kid came to town

Well one cold day a posse captured Billy
and the judge said "String him up for what he did"
And the cowboys and their kin
like the sea, came pouring in
to watch the hanging of Billy the kid.

Well he never travelled heavy
yes he always rode alone
and he soon put many older guns to shame
and he never had a sweetheart
but he finally found a home
under the boothill grave that bears his name.

From a town known as Oyster Bay Long Island
Rode a boy with a six pack in his hand
and his daring life of crime

made him a legend in his time
east and west of the Rio Grande

Overall Meaning

"The Ballad of Billy the Kid" is a song by Billy Joel that tells the story of Billy the Kid, the notorious Wild West outlaw who robbed banks, stagecoaches, and trains in the late 1800s. The song begins by describing Billy's origins in West Virginia, where he began his life of crime with a Colt revolver and a daring attitude. As he moved westward, his reputation grew, and he became a legend throughout the territory. The lyrics highlight the fact that Billy never seemed to travel with a gang and always rode alone, which made him an even more formidable opponent.

The second verse of the song describes Billy's criminal activities as he made his way from Utah to Oklahoma, with even the largest law enforcement agencies finding it difficult to capture him. However, his luck eventually ran out, and he was captured by a posse. Despite his daring and his reputation, he was ultimately sentenced to death by hanging, which inspired a flood of cowboys and townsfolk to witness the event. The song concludes by noting that Billy never had a sweetheart, but he finally found a home under the boothill grave that bears his name.

I can't believe one man is so talented. He has an awesome voice, he's extremely good at playing piano, he's a great song writer, a great lyricist, and he can compose. I get chills when the violins play over the piano and the horns. It's just wonderfully written.

@stuartlimbrick4187

I believe he was porducing and writing for Broadway musicals too! I heard he was playing in Perth WA once at a hotel piano, and had to stop because a lady upstairs complained about the noise! Some people are just plain ignorant!! (lol)

Billy Joel has a half-brother, Alexander Joel, born to his father in Europe, who became a classical conductor there. Alexander Joel was the chief musical director of the Staatstheater Braunschweig from 2001 to 2014

@petercarroll3010

Still does

And I was lucky enough to see him twice - Wembley was awesome but Old Trafford was simply magical!

@larryclacct

One of his best vocal performances. Truly awesome.

I like how the instruments make this song sound like a movie score

@alistairkentucky-david9344

That's what he was going for! It really would have been a good film score.
