The Downeaster Alexa
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I'm on the Downeaster Alexa
And I'm cruising through Block Island Sound
I have charted a course to the vineyard
But tonight, I am Nantucket bound

We took on diesel back in Montauk, yesterday
Left this morning from the bell in Gardiner's Bay
Like all the locals here, I've had to sell my home
Too proud to leave, I worked my fingers to the bone

So I could own my Downeaster Alexa
And I go where the ocean is deep
There are giants out there in the canyons
And a good captain can't fall asleep

I got bills to pay and children who need clothes
I know there's fish out there, but where? God only knows
They say these waters aren't what they used to be
But I got people back on land who count on me

So if you see my Downeaster Alexa
And if you work with the rod and the reel
Tell my wife I am trolling Atlantis
And I still have my hands on the wheel

Now I drive my Downeaster Alexa
More and more miles from shore every year
Since they tell me I can't sell no stripers
And there's no luck in swordfishing here

I was a bay man like my father was before
Can't make a living as a bay man anymore
There ain't much future for a man who works the sea
But there ain't no island left for islanders like me

Yeah, yeah, yeah, oh
Yeah, yeah, yeah, oh

Yeah, yeah, yeah, oh
Yeah, yeah, yeah, oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Billy Joel's "Downeaster Alexa" tell the story of a fisherman and his struggle to make a living. He has a boat named Downeaster Alexa and he's on his way to Nantucket. He's been forced to sell his home and work long hours just to afford his boat. He knows the ocean is treacherous and full of dangerous creatures, but he has to keep going to provide for his family.

The second verse goes on to explain that there are fewer fish in the sea, and it's getting harder and harder to make a living. The singer knows that he has people back on land who depend on him to bring back a catch, so he has to keep going despite the difficult circumstances.

The final verse adds a layer of sadness to the story, as the singer shares that his father was a "bay man" but that he can no longer make a living working on the sea. There is no hope for islanders like himself. The song portrays the sense of helplessness that comes from being trapped in a situation where there seems to be no way out.

@Nathan We have just returned from our vacation in the US a couple of days ago, we also visited beautiful Cape Cod and the east coast....this REALLY gave me Downeaster Alexa vibes (Nantucket is only a few miles off the Cape Cod peninsula)🥰
