The River of Dreams
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
From the mountains of faith
To the river so deep
I must be looking for something
Something sacred I lost
But the river is wide
And it's too hard to cross

Even though I know the river is wide
I walk down every evening and I stand on the shore
I try to cross to the opposite side
So I can finally find out what I've been looking for

In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
Through the valley of fear
To a river so deep
I've been searching for something
Taken out of my soul
Something I'd never lose
Something somebody stole

I don't know why I go walking at night
But now I'm tired and I don't want to walk anymore
I hope it doesn't take the rest of my life
Until I find what it is that I've been looking for

In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
Through the jungle of doubt
To a river so deep
I know I'm searching for something
Something so undefined
That it can only be seen
By the eyes of the blind

In the middle of the night

I'm not sure about a life after this
God knows I've never been a spiritual man
Baptized by the fire, I wade into the river
That runs to the promised land

In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
Through the desert of truth
To the river so deep
We all end in the ocean
We all start in the streams
We're all carried along
By the river of dreams

In the middle of the night

Overall Meaning

In Billy Joel's song The River of Dreams, the singer describes how he goes walking in his sleep in the middle of the night, searching for something that he lost. The river in the song represents the journey of life, and the singer is trying to cross it to find what he's looking for. He crosses various terrains such as mountains, valleys, and jungles, symbolizing the obstacles that people can face in their lives. The river is described as wide and too hard to cross, signifying the difficulty of achieving the singer's goals and finding what he's been missing.

The singer's search seems to be driven by a deep longing for something he feels has been taken from his soul. He's not exactly sure what it is he's searching for, but he knows it's something "sacred" and "undefined" and can only be seen "by the eyes of the blind." He's hoping to find it before the end of his life, but he's tired of searching and is unsure if it's even possible to find what he's looking for.

The last verse of the song takes a more spiritual turn as the singer acknowledges that he's not sure about life after death and that he's never been a spiritual man. He wades into the river "that runs to the promised land," perhaps a reference to the religious idea of heaven, implying that even if he doesn't find what he's looking for in this life, he hopes to find it in the next.

I remember waking up to this song one morning in the early 90's. I woke up just a few moments before 6am when the radio alarm clicked on and started playing this song. The best way I can describe it is that it felt like God had created that morning just for me. I'll don't think I'll ever forget that morning.

This is creepy. When I was very small, probably around 4, I woke up very early, walked out of my room and into the living room. It was dark. This music video was playing on the television and I have never forgotten that moment. I don't even know why it was so moving and impactful, but it was. It's been on my playlists since I have been able to download music.

I'm not a religious person at all, but this truly has a numinous beauty to it. A superb modern gospel.

@wcottee

It's a shame that youth comes so early in life 🙂

I'm only here now because I sought out a hot 100 playlist from 1993 for that sweet sweet nostalgia.
