You’ve Got Me Hummin'
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Umm hmm hmm hmm oh
Hmm hmm hmm hmm

I don't know what you've got
But it's getting to me
It makes my cold nights hot
Hot wind just goes right through me
Love power, baby
It's in your hands
'Cause you've got me hummin', yeah
You've got me hummin', yeah

Umm hmm hmm hmm oh no
Yeah hey hey hey hey
Umm hmm hmm hmm

Wow! I wake up early at night
I can't go back to sleep
I even walk on the red lights
I tied my tongue when I try to speak
When it's my time to walk
When my feet is startin' to run
'Cause you've got me hummin', yeah
'Cause you've got me hummin'

Umm hmm hmm hmm oh no
Yeah hey hey hey hey
Umm hmm hmm hmm, tough baby, uh-huh

Umm hmm hmm hmm, huh, oh no
Hmm

Overall Meaning

The song "You've Got Me Hummin'" by Billy Joel is a love song with a soulful sound. In the first verse, the singer expresses the intensity of the love he feels for his partner. Though he may not be able to pinpoint what exactly it is that his partner has, he knows that it is powerful and it is affecting him deeply. He compares the feeling to a hot wind blowing through him on cold nights. He even uses the phrase "love power" to summarize his partner's hold over him. The chorus reiterates this sentiment by saying that his partner has him "hummin'". In the second verse, he describes how it is affecting his day-to-day life. He wakes up early because he can't stop thinking about his partner, he walks when he should be running, and his tongue is tied when he tries to speak. This verse emphasizes just how much the singer's partner has gotten under his skin. Overall, the song is a testimony to the overwhelming feeling that love can create.

Love The Hassles. Saw them perform back in 1967 at The Aerodrome ( a hippie place) in Schenectady, N.Y. I was 13 years old and considered myself a hippie. I bought their album & I still have it. Who knew Billy Joel would become a STAR after I saw him play in this psychedelic band.? WTG, Billy !

David Caulfield

Spent many a late night (and early morning) in the '60s at the 'Eye' on Dune Road in Southampton, NY listening to what I thought at the time was a pretty good garage band, the Hassles. I use garage band as the highest compliment since that's a pure form of music I fully embraced and still promote. No 'stars,' just guys playing their guts out each and every night. Have the Hassles' CD and play it often.

David Caulfield I envy you those experiences as I was born too late (68) and in the wrong place. I am grateful that I wasn’t too late, however, to witness the rise of Billy Joel’s brilliance in the 70’s, 80’s and beyond.

As a student of music and in learning and reading about my favorite songwriters and musicians I find myself wishing for even the slightest, real glimpse into a day in the life. (Where’s that damned time machine?) 🙂

To whomever shared this - thank you. It adds colorful context to my learning more about Billy Joel.

Actually my friends and I used to stop while walking home from elem entry school and listen to them as they practiced in Johnny Smalls garage in Jericho L.I.

Thank you so much for posting this clip ~~ I played with drums with "Wendy's Love Generation." After hearing "The Hassles" perform I was ashamed to go up on stage. :-)
