I Saw Her Standing There
Billy Joel & Paul McCartney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

1-2-3-4!

Well, she was just 17,
You know what I mean,
And the way she looked was way beyond compare.
So how could I dance with another (ooh)
And I saw her standin' there.
Well she looked at me, and I, I could see
That before too long I'd fall in love with her.
She wouldn't dance with another (whoa)
And I saw her standin' there.

Well, my heart went "boom,"
When I crossed that room,
And I held her hand in mine

Whoa, we danced through the night,
And we held each other tight,
And before too long I fell in love with her.
Now I'll never dance with another (whoa)
Since I saw her standing there

Well, my heart went "boom,"
When I crossed that room,
And I held her hand in mine

Whoa, we danced through the night,
And we held each other tight,
And before too long I fell in love with her.

Now I'll never dance with another (whoa)
Since I saw her standing there

Overall Meaning

The song "Saw Her Standing There" was written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon and recorded by The Beatles in 1963. The song begins with a catchy "1-2-3-4!" count-in, setting the energetic tone for the up-tempo rock and roll song that follows. The lyrics describe the experience of seeing a young woman at a dance and being immediately struck by her beauty and presence. The singer cannot imagine dancing with anyone else and falls in love with her as they dance through the night.

The line "Well, she was just 17, you know what I mean" has been the subject of some controversy over the years, as some people have criticized it as being inappropriate or suggestive. However, McCartney has explained that he was simply trying to capture the excitement of being a teenager and going to a dance, and that he does not see the line as any sort of reference to underage girls.

The song's instrumentation is relatively simple, featuring a driving beat, guitar riffs, and a catchy chorus. The harmonies between McCartney and Lennon are a particular highlight, showcasing the close musical partnership between the two songwriters.

Two greats playing, singing, and sharing a fun, classic song. A truly wonderful moment, and everyone there seemed to know it.

Paul's voice at this concert sounds much better than when he sang right after getting off the plane for the first concert he did with Joel at shea. And though no singer at 80 is going to have an equal voice as they did in they're prime,, having said that, Paul's singing is still great Its.Unbelievable how many countless great masterpieces he's composed during and after the Beatles. In his prime he had one of if not the greatest vocals ever. Self taught and excellent guitar player (lead, rythem) great bass , excellent piano player and very good on drums. The accumulative talent this man has is insane and on a scale I have not seen from others, at least in terms of success and I am certain there will never be anyone in music that will equal what he's done.

@19. SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY I think you're so right. There will NEVER be any other musician, EVER, who will/can even remotely accomplish what Paul McCartney has done. Flat out fact.

@robertbock1944
