Up to mighty London came
An Irish man one day
All the streets were paved with gold
So everyone was gay!
Singing songs of Piccadilly
Strand, and Leicester Square
'Til Paddy got excited and
He shouted to them there:
It's a long way to Tipperary
It's a long way to go.
It's a long way to Tipperary
To the sweetest girl I know!
Goodbye Piccadilly
Farewell Leicester Square!
It's a long long way to Tipperary
But my heart's right there.
It's a long way to Tipperary
It's a long way to go.
It's a long way to Tipperary
To the sweetest girl I know!
Goodbye Piccadilly
Farewell Leicester Square!
It's a long long way to Tipperary
But my heart's right there.
Paddy wrote a letter
To his Irish Molly O'
Saying, "Should you not receive it
Write and let me know!
If I make mistakes in "spelling"
Molly dear", said he
"Remember it's the pen, that's bad
Don't lay the blame on me".

By the time this was recorded, American Quartet tenor John Bieling had blown his voice out and was forced into retirement. But a group with Robert Armour, Steve Porter, William "Mr. Bass Man" Hooley and the absolutely, utterly stupendous Billy Murray is pretty much impossible to beat. One of the most perfect records ever made!

Always reminds me of my two teenage grandfathers that volunteered in 1914. The experiences changed their lives forever. Born in the 1890s as normal working class lads who had no idea what history had in store for them. It makes my heart swell with pride and sad at the same time. Neither talked about the western front or their injuries but my god what two men of character.

My best gratitude! I was singing the song in Russia in 1967!

When a song comes around, it’s a song. But when a song like this barrels at full steam from around the corner and hits you in the face at full steam, you see how magnificent it is!!

Why is it that I can fathom and imagine classical music (older music than this), yet I feel this music is something out of a dream? Something very unreal. Yet, it was (and is) real. It really makes me happy.

King Bishop

Because it’s not the real stuff, that’s all piano rolls and sheet music played by different composers. This is the real stuff, music straight from those peoples mouths.

I can just imagine my great grandfather singing this song.

Die Obersturmbannführer

Mine probably sang 'Deutschland Erwache'.

I never heard my grandfather sing. He liked music, but I never heard him sing a word. He playd some melodies on harmonica.

I never meeting my great grandfathers. They was dead before I was born. One of them so early as 1919.
