The Grand Old Rag
Billy Murray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a feeling comes a-stealing,
And it sets my brain a-reeling,
When I'm listening to the music of a military band.
Any tune like "Yankee Doodle"
Simply sets me off my noodle,
It's that patriotic something that no one can understand.

"Way down south, in the land of cotton,"
Melody untiring,
Ain't that inspiring?

Hurrah! Hurrah! We'll join the jubilee!
And that's going some, for the Yankees, by gum! Red, white and blue, I am
For you!
Honest, you're a grand old flag!

I'm no cranky hanky panky,
I'm a dead square, honest Yankee,
And I'm mighty proud of that old flag
That flies for Uncle Sam.
Though I don't believe in raving
Ev'ry time I see it waving,
There's a chill runs up my back that makes me glad
I'm what I am.

Here's a land with a million soldiers,
That's if we should need 'em,
We'll fight for freedom!

Hurrah! Hurrah! For every Yankee tar
And old G.A.R.
Ev'ry stripe, ev'ry star.
Red, white and blue,
Hats off to you
Honest, you're a grand old flag!

You're a grand old flag,
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.

You're the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.

Ev'ry heart beats true
'Neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or brag.

But should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

Overall Meaning

"The Grand Old Rag," also known as "You're a Grand Old Flag" is a patriotic song written by George M. Cohan in 1906. Billy Murray's rendition of the song is a testament to the inherent love that many Americans have for their country. The song begins with an admission that something happens to Murray when he hears the music of a military band, specifically when any tune like "Yankee Doodle" is played. Although he cannot explain it, there is a feeling that comes over him that is patriotic and undeniable.

Murray's lyrics in "The Grand Old Rag" go on to describe a land that is proud of its history, its flag, and its soldiers. The power of the song is in the way that it taps into the American psyche, creating a sense of pride and nostalgia for a country that has been built upon the ideals of freedom and democracy. The chorus -- "You're a grand old flag, You're a high flying flag, And forever in peace may you wave" -- is a testament to the resilience of the country and its continued strength in the face of adversity. The chorus is also a call to unity, urging Americans to come together as one in their love for the country.

The song is also rich in metaphor and symbolism, evoking the land of cotton, Yankee tars, and G.A.R. soldiers. These lyrics are a reminder of the sacrifices that people have made to build and protect the country. The song's final line -- "But should auld acquaintance be forgot, Keep your eye on the grand old flag" -- encourages Americans to remember their past and to guide their future by honoring the ideals represented by the flag.

Rest In Peace Mr.Murray

@bobbyfrancis8957

When I read my book, "Show Biz - From Vaude to Video back in 1971, it said Cohan titled the song "Grand Old Rag" and I was laughing and from then on I'm calling it a rag, forever and ever. And I'll admit, Cohan is a great lyricist,I read his autobiography "Twenty Years On Broadway" ( read and finished it in two days, couldn't put it down) all he had was six weeks of school! The principal called him to his office and said, "You're finished. You're through." I wish they said that to me, I was mostly self-taught. I was reading before I started kindergarten!
