Bittersweet
Billy No Mates Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A little light looks through her bedroom window
She dances and I dream, she's not so far as she seems
Of brighter meadows, melting sunsets
Her hair blowing in the breeze
And she can't see me watching
And I'm thinking love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
It's bittersweet more sweet than bitter
Bitter than sweet
It's a bittersweet surrender

It's bittersweet more sweet than bitter
Bitter than sweet
It's a bittersweet surrender

I said I'm older now
I work in the city, we live together
But it's different than my dream
Morning light fills the room, I rise
She pretends she's sleeping
Are we everything we wanted
And I'm thinking love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
It's bittersweet more sweet than bitter
Bitter than sweet
It's a bittersweet surrender

It's bittersweet more sweet than bitter
Bitter than sweet
It's a bittersweet surrender

I said I know we don't talk about it
We don't tell each other
All the little things that we need
We work our way around each other
As we tremble and we
As we tremble and we bleed
As we tremble and we
As we tremble and we bleed

It's bittersweet more sweet than bitter
Bitter than sweet
It's a bittersweet surrender

It's bittersweet more sweet than bitter

Bitter than sweet
It's a bittersweet surrender

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Billy No Mates's song Bittersweet suggest a nostalgic longing for an idyllic past that is now out of reach. The chorus of "It's bittersweet more sweet than bitter / Bitter than sweet / It's a bittersweet surrender" sets the tone for the conflicting emotions that the singer experiences. The first verse describes a beautiful girl framed by a bedroom window, dancing in the light with hair flowing in the breeze. The singer watches her, thinking only of love. The second verse transitions to the present, where the singer is older and working in the city, living with the girl. The morning light illuminates their space together, but the girl pretends to be sleeping. The question hangs heavily in the air, are they what they wanted to be? The third verse seems to hint at a lack of communication between the two, as they work their way around one another, holding back the little things that they each need from the other, trembling and bleeding as they go.

Overall, Bittersweet is a reflection on the nature of love, and how the expectations we place on it may not always be met by reality. The use of "bittersweet" in the chorus is a clever way of summing up this sentiment- love has both beautiful and painful aspects, and we must surrender to both in order to fully experience it.

Maybe I'm the one who's so full of shit

Point the finger
Reject the blame
Dig deep in a heart that breaks
No spine to be found
Pick me up (pick me up off the ground)

Maybe I'm the one who's so full of shit
Point the finger
Reject the blame
All my friends who have wasted their lives
We are one in the same

I was too quick to judge
We're all alone in this

I put the drugs in between us
I told myself that it changed you
But I'm the one who changed

Point the finger
Reject the blame
I call out for help
But I'll never call your fucking name
Anguish

I did away with the poison
But I still feel like I'm dying
I did away with the poison
But I still feel like I'm dying

@PTR Koulou it depends on where you press on the bridge. More to the right, It gets alot more beefy. More to the left, it gets that percussive sound.

@JacketYT I mean yeah, obviously, but it doesn't feel like he normally presses all the three strings with his fret hand, idk if that makes sense.

Knocked Loose is probably one of the heaviest bands I've ever heard, while at the same time lyrically addressing things that actually matter. Honestly those last lines can be a clear analogy for many shitty things. Like, for me, I have never taken hard drugs but I see this as also an analogy to depression (rawr xD). But in actual seriousness and as fucked up as it sounds the last lines of this song remind me why I'm scared to even try to get better. I don't want to dig a deeper hole. I don't want to deal with the core reason why I'm sad in the first place in fear it'll fuck me up more. Even know the song was about drugs, that metaphor used still helps to not feel so alone.
