Send Me Back Home
Billy Ray Cyrus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The warden led a prisoner down a hallway to his doom
I stand up to say goodbye like all the rest
And I heard him tell the warden just before he reached my cell
"Let my guitar playing friend do my request"

Let him sing me back home with song I used to hear
And make my old memories come alive
And take me away and turn back the years
And sing me back home before I die

I recall last Sunday morning a chair from off the streets
Came in to sing a few old gospel songs
And I heard him tell the singers,"There's a song my momma sang
Could I hear it once before you move along?"

Let him sing me back home with song I used to hear
And make my old memories come alive
And take me away and turn back the years

And sing me back home before I die
"And sing me back home before I die"

Overall Meaning

The Billy Ray Cyrus song "Sing Me Back Home" tells the story of a prisoner who is about to be executed. As the warden leads him down the hallway towards his doom, the other prisoners stand up to bid him farewell. Before the prisoner reaches Billy Ray Cyrus's cell, he requests that his guitar-playing friend sing him back home with a song from his past. The prisoner wants to relive memories from his life before his execution.

The prisoner is not the only one who wants to be "sung back home." Billy Ray Cyrus recalls a man who came into the prison to sing gospel songs. The man asked the singers to play a song that his mother used to sing. The man wants to hear the song one more time before they leave.

The song "Sing Me Back Home" is a powerful representation of the importance of music in our lives. Whether we are facing death or simply missing our loved ones, music has the ability to take us back to a different time and place. The song also highlights the individual experiences of those within the prison system and reminds listeners of the humanity of individuals who have been incarcerated.

Billy Ray did a lot of terrific songs. He was way beyond the One-joke-act he was painted as. "Words by Heart" means a hell of a lot to me.

I think Billy did a great job on singing this song ! He also sang Green, Green Grass of Home very well.
Billy was much more than a one hit wonder. Plus you have to give this man credit for writing many of his own songs.
I am an Elvis fan forever, but you have to give Billy credit, to still be out in the public eye after 24 years, means he must have some faithful fans also.
