These Boots Are Made For Walkin
Billy Ray Cyrus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You keep saying
You've got something for me
Something you call love but confess
You've been a messing where you shouldn't a been a messing
And now someone else is getting all your best

[Chorus]
These boots are made for walkin'
And that's just what they'll do
One of these days those boots are
Gonna walk all over you

You keep lyin' when you oughta be truthin'
And you keep losin' when you oughta be changin'
What's right is right
But you ain't been right yet

[Chorus]

You keep playin' where you shouldn't be playin'
And you keep thinkin' that you'll never get burned HA !
I just found me a brand new box of matches, yeah
And what he knows you ain't had time to learn

[Chorus]

Are you ready boots?
Start walking

Overall Meaning

These lyrics are from the song "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" by Billy Ray Cyrus. The song is a cover of a 1966 hit by Nancy Sinatra, but Cyrus gives it a country spin. The song is directed at a man who has been cheating on his partner and betraying her trust. The lyrics suggest that the woman is tired of his lies and games and is ready to leave him behind. The hook "these boots are made for walking, and that's just what they'll do, one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you" implies that the woman is strong and determined enough to stand up for herself and walk out of the relationship.

The first verse of the song accuses the man of betraying the woman's trust and suggests that he has been sleeping with someone else. The woman seems to have had enough of his excuses and demands that he face the consequences of his actions. In the second verse, she criticizes his behavior and suggests that he needs to change his ways if he wants to stay with her. She tells him that he needs to start telling the truth and doing the right thing if he wants to be with her.

The third verse is particularly powerful as the woman announces that she has a new box of matches, implying that she is ready to burn the bridges and leave him behind. The song ends with the woman challenging her boots to start walking, suggesting that she is now ready to take on the world and face whatever comes her way.

This is and will always be my favorite version of this song. Thumbs up to Billy Ray. Shame he doesn't do country like this anymore much in 2023.

Why is this song so underrated from Billy Ray cyrus

First Last

Because he ruins it

Because it's a cover -- a really bad one.. Compare Nancy Sinatra's original which is sexy, fun, celebrates feminism and is as good an invective as anything in Dylan's catalog. It çoincides/creates the women's fashion statement of go-go boots making it very much a song of its time. In short, the original was revolutionary. This version is none of those things. Billy Ray Cyrus is messing where he shouldn't of been messing and this song is, at best, unfortunate. Nancy's version walks all over his and I'd love to see a mashup vid of her doing just that to BRC because he is the sort of guy NS is addressing in the original.

It would have been more fun to have heard someone like Miley do this one (and I am generally underwhelmed by her) because I think she'd have had fun with it and it fits with her image as a rulebreaker and she, at least could capture the bad girl spirit that is an integral part of this iconic song.

The only way BRC could do this song justice and present in a new light is to have a video of him singing it in drag. Until then, just no.

Because He is a Joke.. A one hit wonder.. And sang a woman's song and very badly at that. Never liked him.. Never have and Damn sure Never will.

Delinquent Road Runner the original song is by Lee Hazlewood but he only demoed it he wrote the song and gave it to Nancy Sinatra. Lee wrote almost of Nancys songs and have a whole album together. she originally didn't want the song bc she said it sounded to harsh. She didn't steal anything lee and her were great friends.
