Trail Of Tears
Billy Ray Cyrus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Too many broken promises
Too many Trail of Tears
Too many times you were left cold
For oh so many years

Too many times you walked away
And was made to feel ashamed
And though you only tried to give
You were often blamed

How can this world be so dark
So unfair and so untrue
How did the cards of life
Fold right on top of you

God in Heaven, hear my prayer
If you are still above
Send the children hopes and dreams
And lots and lots of love
For this I only ask of you
To conquer all their fears

And let them soar like eagles
Across the Trail of Tears

Overall Meaning

In Billy Ray Cyrus's song Trail Of Tears, the artist illustrates the pain and broken promises endured by Native Americans, as a result of being forced to relocate from their ancestral land. Cyrus compares the tragedy of the Trail of Tears to the setbacks and disappointments that individuals face in their personal lives. The repetition of "Too many" emphasizes the magnitude of the suffering and the number of injustices faced by Indigenous peoples. The lyrics suggest that despite their best efforts to contribute positively to society, Indigenous people have been repeatedly wronged and ostracized.

This song isn't simply about the suffering of the Cherokee. This is a poem describing the painful issue of intolerance and human displacement and humiliation. It is very applicable to our time period.

@1984AMCinNC

Cherokee were the last of the tribes of the southeast to have a trail of tears....choctaw were first, followed by creek & chickasaw then seminole and finally cherokee.
