Everybody Wants You
Billy Squier Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You see 'em coming at you every night
Strung on pretension, they fall for you at first sight
You know their business, you think it's a bore
They make you restless, it's nothing you ain't seen before
Get around town, spend your time on the run
You never let down, say you do it for fun
You never miss a play, though you make quite a few
You give it all away when everybody wants you

You crave attention, you can never say "no"
Throw your affections anyway the wind blows
You always make it, you're on top of the scene
You sell the copy like the cover of a magazine
Putting on the eyes till there's nobody else
You never realize what you do to yourself
The things that they see make the daily reviews
You never get free when everybody wants you

Everybody knows you
Everybody snows you
Everybody needs you, leads you, bleeds you

Nights of confusion and impossible dreams
Days at the mirror, patching up around the seams
You got your glory, you paid for it all
You take your pension in loneliness and alcohol
Say goodbye to conventional ways
You can't escape the hours, you lose track of the days
The more you understand, seems the more like you do
You never get away, everybody wants you

Everybody want you

Overall Meaning

The song "Everybody Wants You" by Billy Squier is about a person who is constantly pursued by others because of their status and charm. The lyrics describe how this person is always on the run, never allowing themselves to slow down or get tied down to anyone. They seem to have it all, but the cost of their fame and constant pursuit is never being able to truly escape from the expectations and needs of others. They are constantly sought after, and the pressure to maintain their image and lifestyle leads them on a path of confusion and loneliness.

The first verse describes how this person is constantly bombarded by others who are attracted to their image and status. They know all about their business, but it becomes boring and repetitive. The person described needs to keep running to keep from getting caught in the grips of another person's expectations. They live a life of constant chaos, never allowing themselves to rest or slow down. The second verse paints a picture of a person who is desperately seeking attention, but can never seem to say no to anyone. They live for the moment and will do anything necessary to get what they want. They sell themselves like the cover of a magazine, but fail to see the destructive force this has on their mental and emotional health.

Overall, the song portrays the way in which fame and status can lead to a life of emptiness and loneliness. The constant pressure to maintain an image and lifestyle takes a toll on an individual, and the desire for attention and acceptance is never truly satisfied.

This song is 39 years old and still kicks some serious ass. Lonely is the night is also awesome. The 80’s the best music ever!! 🇨🇦❤️

True, true, almost true! The 70's kicked some serious musical butt too. Montrose: Space Station # 5. And a band from England I need not name!

Forty years ago, everybody wanted "Billy Squier"!
This song is truly ageless!

I remember being a little kid and thought the song "Stroke me, Stroke me" was really "Snowflake, Snowflake".
Boy was I naïve.
But consider how this guy made great music while mocking the very industry itself.
Sadly he was also a victim of it.

I'm 71 years old. I,ll keep Rockin' till they put me in the hole!! I love about 90 percent of all of the 80s Rockers that are still here or gone. Everything fr/ Def Leopard to Nilsson. Also, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, etc. I wish you fellow Rockers all the best. May The Lord watch over you.
