The band existed for almost a decade before mainstream success. The members met and played in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Secondary School under the name Pezz and remained underground in Toronto's indie music scene until 2001. The band renamed itself Billy Talent after running into legal trouble with the old name. It was then that Kowalewicz's connection with an employee of Warner Music Canada's A&R department landed the band a record deal and launched them into mainstream success. Since then, Billy Talent has made three multi-platinum records in Canada and continues to expand their success overseas; this included touring for 20 months supporting their second album. They released their third album, Billy Talent III, in 2009, and their fourth album, Dead Silence, in 2012. Dead Silence was followed up by a full UK tour throughout October and November 2012. To commemorate the longevity since the release of their first studio album, the band has released a greatest hits album entitled Hits in 2014. In 2015, they began to prepare material for their fifth studio album. Just before entering the studio, drummer Aaron Solowoniuk decided to sit out the recording sessions while he continued his longstanding battle with multiple sclerosis. Fellow Canadian Jordan Hastings was quickly recruited to play as Solowoniuk's studio stand-in, and, in early 2016, the group completed work on Afraid of Heights, which was released in July of that year. The band's most recent album is Crisis of Faith, released in January 2022.

Without a reason why
We walk past the flowers
Don't stop for a breath
Until they're above our heads
We used to fight
Have we made amends?
Watching you spent the time you have left
Trapped in a cold blue bed
In darkness we'll rest
Count the days down to one last breath
In darkness we'll rest
So forgive what you can't forget
We said that we would call
But we never spoke at all
The years drifted by
We've built up these walls
For reasons that seem so small
If this is the end, let's bury the past
This might be our one last chance
Together until the last grain of sand
Has dropped from the hourglass
So open your eyes
Open your eyes and don't forget to pray
If we lose the fight
If we lose the fight your spirit will live through me
It's time we make right
It's time we make right the pages of history
Until we find
Until we find a cure for the enemy
All those you've loved
All those who've died
All we have left is what lives in our minds
All those you've loved
All those who've died
I know their spirits are up in the sky
All those you've loved
All those who've died
All we have left is what lives in our minds
All those you've loved
All those who've died
I know their spirits are up in the sky
So open your eyes
Open your eyes and don't forget to pray
If we lose the fight
If we lose the fight your spirit will live through me
It's time we make right
It's time we make right the pages of history
Until we find
Until we find a cure for the enemy
In darkness we'll rest
Count the days down to one last breath
In darkness we'll rest
So forgive what you can't forget
(In darkness we'll rest)
All those you've loved
(Count the days down to one last breath)
All those who've died
All we have left is what lives in our minds
(In darkness we'll rest)
All those you've loved
(So forgive what you can't forget)
All those who've died
I know their spirits are up in the sky
In darkness we'll rest
The lyrics to Billy Talent's song "Cure For the Enemy" explore the themes of time, regret, and the search for redemption. The opening lines set the tone of the song, with the suggestion that time passes without any discernible reason, leading us to overlook the beauty around us. The lyrics then shift to the relationship between father and son, with the son wondering whether they have resolved their previous conflicts. As he watches his father suffer on his deathbed, the son recognizes the importance of forgiveness and the need to move past old grudges in the face of mortality.
The chorus of the song urges the listener to open their eyes and focus on what is truly important – love, forgiveness, and fighting for what is right. The repeated refrain of "all those you've loved, all those who've died" serves as a reminder of the impermanence of life and the importance of cherishing our loved ones while they are still with us. The final lines of the song suggest that even in darkness, there is a sense that the spirits of those who have passed on are present and watching over us.
Overall, the lyrics to "Cure For the Enemy" are a poignant exploration of the human experience, acknowledging the pain and sorrow that comes with loss, while offering hope for redemption and the possibility of a better tomorrow.
