The band existed for almost a decade before mainstream success. The members met and played in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Secondary School under the name Pezz and remained underground in Toronto's indie music scene until 2001. The band renamed itself Billy Talent after running into legal trouble with the old name. It was then that Kowalewicz's connection with an employee of Warner Music Canada's A&R department landed the band a record deal and launched them into mainstream success. Since then, Billy Talent has made three multi-platinum records in Canada and continues to expand their success overseas; this included touring for 20 months supporting their second album. They released their third album, Billy Talent III, in 2009, and their fourth album, Dead Silence, in 2012. Dead Silence was followed up by a full UK tour throughout October and November 2012. To commemorate the longevity since the release of their first studio album, the band has released a greatest hits album entitled Hits in 2014. In 2015, they began to prepare material for their fifth studio album. Just before entering the studio, drummer Aaron Solowoniuk decided to sit out the recording sessions while he continued his longstanding battle with multiple sclerosis. Fellow Canadian Jordan Hastings was quickly recruited to play as Solowoniuk's studio stand-in, and, in early 2016, the group completed work on Afraid of Heights, which was released in July of that year. The band's most recent album is Crisis of Faith, released in January 2022.

Billy Talent Lyrics

Hidden agenda (lies)
You think we're stupid, how dare you?
The rug has not been pulled
Over our eyes, you fool
We can see right through
Tip-toeing villain (lies)
Your false intentions have warn thin
But we've been in your room and in your closet too
We've got one on you
Lies make it better
Lies are forever
Lies to go home to
Lies you wake up to
Lies from the alter
Lies make you falter
Lies keep your mouth fed
Lies 'til your death bed
Lies
Inside an office, a fallen angel (lies)
A smilin' Buddha with snake eyes (lies)
Creates the latest trends
And I just can't pretend
Don't call me your friend
When all these lies make it better
Lies are forever
Lies to go home to
Lies you wake up to
Lies from the alter
Lies make you falter
Lies keep your mouth fed
Lies 'til your death bed
Lies they make it better
Lies they are forever
Lies to go home to
Lies you wake up to
Lies from the alter
Lies, they make you falter
Lies keep your mouth fed
Lies 'til your death bed
Lies
Lies will come back to haunt you
Bulletproof your limousine
Lies will come back to haunt you
Hit and run, a broken dream
Lies make it better
Lies are forever
Lies to go home to
Lies to wake up to
Lies from the altar
Lies make you falter
Lies keep your mouth fed
Lies 'til your death bed
Lies they make it better
Lies they are forever
Lies to go home to
Lies you wake up to
Lies from the alter
Lies, they make you falter
Lies keep your mouth fed
Lies 'til your death bed
Lies
in Billy Talent's song "Lies" is a commentary on the prevalence of deception and dishonesty in today's society. The lyrics speak about individuals who deceive others in order to get ahead or maintain their status, and how lies can become a crutch that people rely on. The song starts off by calling out those who engage in false conversation and have hidden agendas, and it makes it clear that the singer and the listeners are not fooled by them. The second verse focuses on a specific individual in an office setting who is described as a "fallen angel" and a "smiling Buddha with snake eyes". This person creates trends, but the singer doesn't want to be associated with them because they are deceptive.
Throughout the song, the chorus repeats the phrase "Lies make it better, lies are forever," emphasizing the idea that lies can be a long-term solution to problems, even though they often cause more harm than good. The repetition of this phrase also serves to reinforce the message of the song and make it more memorable for the listeners. The final lines of the song warn that lies will come back to haunt those who tell them, and that even those who try to protect themselves with material possessions like a bulletproof limousine will eventually face the consequences of their deceit.
Overall, "Lies" is a powerful song that challenges listeners to think critically about the role of dishonesty in their own lives and in society as a whole. It encourages people to be honest and genuine in their interactions with others, despite the sometimes difficult consequences of doing so.
