The band existed for almost a decade before mainstream success. The members met and played in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Secondary School under the name Pezz and remained underground in Toronto's indie music scene until 2001. The band renamed itself Billy Talent after running into legal trouble with the old name. It was then that Kowalewicz's connection with an employee of Warner Music Canada's A&R department landed the band a record deal and launched them into mainstream success. Since then, Billy Talent has made three multi-platinum records in Canada and continues to expand their success overseas; this included touring for 20 months supporting their second album. They released their third album, Billy Talent III, in 2009, and their fourth album, Dead Silence, in 2012. Dead Silence was followed up by a full UK tour throughout October and November 2012. To commemorate the longevity since the release of their first studio album, the band has released a greatest hits album entitled Hits in 2014. In 2015, they began to prepare material for their fifth studio album. Just before entering the studio, drummer Aaron Solowoniuk decided to sit out the recording sessions while he continued his longstanding battle with multiple sclerosis. Fellow Canadian Jordan Hastings was quickly recruited to play as Solowoniuk's studio stand-in, and, in early 2016, the group completed work on Afraid of Heights, which was released in July of that year. The band's most recent album is Crisis of Faith, released in January 2022.

Baby I don't need you, well baby I don't need you
Once occupied by a goddess, now it's a room full of boxes
She said, "it's time to leave you" but baby I don't need you!
In a perfect world... her face would not exist
In a perfect world... a broken heart is fixed
In a perfect world... I'd see no therapistIn a perfect world... this wouldn't make me sick
I never got the whole story, not 'til after she left me
Baby I don't need you, well baby I don't need you
Word on the street is she fucked him, while we were playing in Cleveland
Well baby I don't need you, you're fading in my rearview
In a perfect world... her face would not exist
In a perfect world... a broken heart is fixed
In a perfect world... I'd see no therapist
In a perfect world... this wouldn't make me sick
She pulls the trigger until the gun goes click!
She pulls the trigger until the gun goes click!
In a perfect world... her face would not exist
In a perfect world... this wouldn't make me sick!

The lyrics of Billy Talent's "Perfect World" describe the aftermath of a failed relationship. The singer begins by stating that all they shared was a physical connection, as evidenced by the shared mattress, a lie, and an address. The singer does not need the lover anymore as he moves on to another phase of his life. The room they used to share, once a symbol of their passion, is now filled with boxes as the woman moves out.
In the chorus, the singer imagines a perfect world where the memory of the woman does not exist. He wishes for a world that is free of heartbreak, therapy, and the emotional toll the failed relationship has taken on him. The singer then reveals that he never got the complete story of why she left him until after she was gone. The truth is that she was unfaithful with another man while they were traveling to Cleveland. The singer is upset, but he resolves to move on with his life, leaving the woman behind in his rearview mirror.
The bridge of the song contains a series of computer commands - "Control-Alt-Deleted" - that evoke the act of restarting a computer. This phrase might symbolize the singer's desire to start anew without any memory of the failed relationship. The song ends with the repeated line, "she pulls the trigger until the gun goes click," which might be interpreted as a metaphor for the woman taking action until there is nothing left to give.
