Poison Ivy
Billy Thorpe; The Aztecs Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But everybody knows
She'll get you in touch
You can look but you'd better not touch
[Chorus]
Poison Ivy, Poison Ivy
Late at night when your sleeping
She's pretty as a daisy
But look out man she's crazy
She'll really reel you in
If you let her get under your skin
Measles makes you mumpy
And mumps will make you lumpy
And chicken pox will make you jump and twitch (make you jump and twitch)
A common cold will fool ya
And whooping coughs will cool ya
But poison ivy loves to make you itch
Your gonna need an ocean (gonna need an ocean)
Of calamine lotion (oh, your gonna need it)
You'll be scratching like a hound (boy, you'll be itching)
The minute you start to mess around
[Chorus: x2]
Measles makes you mumpy
And mumps will make you lumpy
And chicken pox will make you jump and twitch (make you jump and twitch)
A common cold will fool ya
And whooping coughs will cool ya
But poison ivy loves to make you itch
Your gonna need an ocean (gonna need an ocean)
Of calamine lotion (oh, your gonna need it)
You'll be scratching like a hound (boy, you'll be itching)
The minute you start to mess around
[Chorus]
The lyrics of Poison Ivy by Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs tells the story of a seductive woman whom everybody knows is dangerous. She's portrayed as a rose with hidden thorns that can prick you if you get too close. Poison Ivy is tempting but perilous, and once you're under her spell, you're in trouble. The first verse warns that you can look at Poison Ivy, but it's better not to touch, implying that she'll hurt you in the end. The chorus underlines the danger and eeriness that she brings and reveals that she creeps around in the dead of night.
The second verse compares Poison Ivy to various illnesses, scoffing at measles, mumps, chickenpox, and common cold. They have nothing on Poison Ivy and what she'll make you do. The last line says that Poison Ivy loves to make you itch, emphasizing that the harm doesn't stop once you've fallen under her siren call. The final chorus reiterates the need for calamine lotion, indicating that the damage is already done.
Overall, the lyrics of Poison Ivy can be interpreted in various ways, depending on what kind of poison ivy or temptation the listener associates with. It talks about the fatal attraction, a situation where something or someone is highly appealing or charming but will ultimately cause harm or death.

In spite of its mid-60s style, this song still sounds great in 2023 -- truly a timeless classic!

Best version of this song that I've ever heard. So much better than the Rolling Stones' version.

I have just heard The Hollies version of this, now I think the Hollies are one of the greatest. Can't hold a candle to this version. Still sends shivers up my spine. R.I.P. BIlly
