Just listened to Rod Stewart's version from his Greatest American Songbook Volume IV and knew I remembered it from somewhere. For me, the other was White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye - also fun. Until today, I didn't realize there was a movie entitled Blue Skies where the song originated from. It's on my list. I just heard this whistled in a Ronald Coleman movie Cynara, read it was by Irving Berlin in 1926 I'm still surprised at how long ago 😳 I've only heard it sung by Willie Nelson !!! What a difference in the 2 versions

This pretty girl was supposedly Bing's real life girlfriend and was in love with him. You can see the connection between them...gorgeous..... Who can blame her Bing was delicious at any age.....and remember his second wife was a beautiful young woman thirty years younger than him....and she adored him....as did his stunning first wife who was madly in love with him until the day she died. Lucky man...lucky ladies...

The fashion was the norm for the era. As to age, have a rad of some older mills and boon novels (written for and by women). the man is usually 10-15 years older than the woman. Its also been the norm in hollywood for decades . As for renditions, JIm Reeves for me.

You don't get out much do you? Though made in 1946, the story takes place just after World War One. Bing's outfit is meant to look like what men wore then. (Btw Baggy pants? Silly outfit? Like the baggy pants guys wear these days? The kind that fall off their asses and show off their underwear? Those silly outfits?)

The song is NOT "dark and sad". It's about blue skies, birds singing, sun shining, everything's right, he's in love, and so on. Exactly the same lyrics Willie sings, btw! (While you're at it, look up the definition of droll. It doesn't mean what you think.) And remember, in 1946, just after the hard years of WW2, people wanted musicals. Musicals that were wonderfully corny, unrealistic, very escapist and yes, romantic - like Blue Skies. The age difference between Bing and Joan didn't matter. Age differences in movies don't much matter nowadays either.

Willie's version of Blue Skies is unique and wonderful. Comparing it to Bing's is ridiculous - apples to oranges. Also, listening to singers like Crosby and Sinatra inspired Willie to start a career in music, and influenced his decision to make the album Stardust, which contains Blue Skies.
