Blue Skies
Bing Crosby/Danny Kaye Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue skies smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies do I see
Bluebirds singing a song
Nothing but bluebirds all day long

Never saw the sun shining so bright
Never saw things going so right
Noticing the days hurrying by
When you're in love, my, how they fly

Blue days, all of them gone
Nothing but blue skies from now on
(Blue skies smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies do I see)

Never saw the sun shining so bright
Never saw things going so right
Noticing the days hurrying by
When you're in love, my, how they fly

Blue days, all of them gone

Nothing but blue skies from now on
Nothing but blue skies from now on

Overall Meaning

Blue Skies is a joyful song performed by Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. The song is about the elation and contentment experienced by individuals when they are consumed by love. The opening lyrics of the song convey an image of the singer's happiness as they gaze up at the blue sky. The use of the color blue is significant as blue has long been associated with trust, loyalty, and stability, which are all essential components of a healthy relationship. The blue skies and bluebirds are a symbol of the positive changes that love can bring to an individual's life.

The first verse of the song reveals the intensity of the emotions the singer is feeling by highlighting that they have never witnessed such a luminous sun or things going so well. The second verse of the song emphasizes the fleetingness of time when you are in love. The singer notes how fast the days are passing them by, which is a reminder to cherish the moments with one's beloved.

Finally, the chorus of the song offers a promise for the future, indicating that all of the singer's blue days are gone and nothing but blue skies lay ahead. The conclusion of the song is about the hopeful future the individual perceives, as the colors of their world have changed because of love.

Just listened to Rod Stewart's version from his Greatest American Songbook Volume IV and knew I remembered it from somewhere. For me, the other was White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye - also fun. Until today, I didn't realize there was a movie entitled Blue Skies where the song originated from. It's on my list. Thank you for sharing.

Here because of Picard. Heard it originally in Nemesis, but isn't it lovely, just listen to that!

Bing they don't sing em like this anymore!

Bravo!

@ThePapillonslave

One of the greatest renditions of a great American song. Majestic, mature and resolved

@grafter8337

Apart from its colour this film has everything: Bing singing, Fred dancing, Billy de Wolfe at his most hilarious and the delectable Joan Caulfield.

@sallymalec2685

Boy could Bing sing!

@MauricioCalderonisme

Bing can sing songs....A lot of songs

@Cromartie

I remember being inspired by this and singing the song during a rainy day. It was a perfect coincidence that I timed it to the rain clearing up. XD

I just heard this whistled in a Ronald Coleman movie Cynara, read it was by Irving Berlin in 1926 I'm still surprised at how long ago 😳 I've only heard it sung by Willie Nelson !!! What a difference in the 2 versions

Just as Mr. Berlin would have expected it to be rendered.
