A Ghost of a Chance
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I need your love so badly
I love you, oh, so madly
But I don't stand a
Ghost of a chance with you!
I thought at last I'd found you
But other loves surround you
And I don't stand a
Ghost of a chance with you

If you'd surrender
Just for a tender kiss or two
You might discover
that I'm the lover, meant for you
And I'd be true
But what's the good of scheming
I Know I must be dreaming

For I don't stand a
Ghost of a chance with you!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bing Crosby's song A Ghost of a Chance describe a love that is unrequited and seemingly impossible. The singer acknowledges their deep desire and love for someone, but notes that there are other suitors vying for their attention. Despite this, the singer remains hopeful and persistent, dreaming of a chance to be with their love. However, they are also realistic and understand that the odds are against them, as they don't stand a ghost of a chance with their love.

The lyrics paint a picture of a heartbroken individual who is willing to do anything to win over their love, including scheming and dreaming. Nevertheless, the singer is also conscious of the futility of their efforts, as their love interest is seemingly unattainable. Overall, the song conveys a sense of longing, regret, and hope mixed with a sense of acceptance and resignation.

This whole Record has a very Haunting and atmospheric feeling to it! The flip side of this DARLING Record "Just An Echo" brings Me to tears every time!

@jimcrowley1709

The intro is amazing and set the tone to this one. On some LP reissues this has been cut out and starts with the piano and then the voice

@lecaprice2572

I agree that this is one of Bing's very best !

@dougcampbell7019

I love it! Plus, this is the only version I could find with the 2 line intro (i.e., the complete song)

@mara3842

And then there was Mildred Bailey's wistful version, recorded in June 1939.

I was always put off by his “modern” recordings since childhood. But discovering his late 20’s and early 30’s proper presentations of songs completely redeemed him in my opinion (at least with regard to those early pure and atmospheric classic interpretations).

If there’s a Ken out there, don’t let your Myrla go. Despite what has happened, fight for each other and never let each other go.
