Along the Santa Fe Trail
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Angels come to paint the desert nightly
When the moon is beaming brightly
Along the Santa Fe trail
Stardust scattered all along the highway
On a rainbow-colored sky way
Along the Santa Fe trail

Beside you
I'm riding every hill and dale
Wide shadows hide you
Just like a pretty purple veil
Thereby hangs a tale

I found you
And the mountains that surround you

Are the wall I built around you
Along the Santa Fe trail

Overall Meaning

The song "Along the Santa Fe Trail" by Bing Crosby includes beautiful lyrics that evoke stunning images of the American Southwest. The song begins by describing the desert as a canvas for angels to paint upon, particularly under the "beaming brightly" of the moon. This celestial landscape is then emphasized with the beautiful stardust that appears to be scattered all along the roads and highways on this beautiful trail. These lines suggest a sense of awe and wonder at the natural beauty of the Southwest.

The lyrics then shift to the personal, as the singer describes riding alongside a companion and taking in the stunning scenery of the Santa Fe Trail. The imagery is heightened as the lyrics describe the way that the "wide shadows" hide this companion, as though they are wearing a "pretty purple veil." The singer reveals that they have built up emotional walls around this person and are now entranced by the landscape that surrounds them. The final line of the song brings these ideas together, suggesting that the natural beauty of the trail has helped to create a safe space around this companion, where they can exist without fear or harm.

Overall, this song is a beautiful tribute to the natural and emotional beauty of the Santa Fe Trail, and the way that it can serve as a refuge for those who seek it.

I love this beautiful tune, one of my favorite cowboy numbers. Billy May's lovely arrangement for GM is better, but Bing's vocal is, of course, far superior to Ray Eberle's.

I wonder why Max Steiner is not credited, since he wrote the score for the film and they used the main title theme in this song.

@the78prof72

Steiner composed the instrumental score but not the songs that were heard in the film. See here: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033021/soundtrack/?ref_=tt_trv_snd

John Scott Trotter was a North Carolina youth in 1925 when he met and became Hal Kemp’s pianist (and arranger from 1929-36)...he was a class act per Bing Crosby, whom Trotter served as music director for many years and is credited with giving Bing the arrangements that led him away from jazz and more toward ballads and easy listening. We here in NC agree with what another North Carolina legend, Kay Kyser (then retired in his 70s) said: “Hal Kemp’s Band was unique, beautiful and the best...”...John Scott Trotter was one of the big reasons for the sound Kemp had. Hats off to John Scott Trotter!
