Aren't You Glad You're You?
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(verse)
do you make the most of your five senses,
Or is your life like Old Mother Hubbard's shelf?
Well, mark this on your slate,
Life is not an empty plate.
That's if you appreciate yourself.

(refrain)
Ev'ry time you're near a rose,
Aren't you glad you've got a nose?
And if the dawn is fresh with dew,
Aren't you glad you're you?
When a meadowlark appears,
Aren't you glad you've got two ears?
And if your heart is singing, too,
Aren't you glad you're you?
You can see a summer sky,
Or touch a friendly hand,
Or taste an apple pie.
Pardon the grammar, but ain't life grand?
And when you wake up each morn,
Aren't you glad that you were born?

Think what you've got the whole day through,
Aren't you glad you're you?

Overall Meaning

In this song, Bing Crosby encourages his listeners to appreciate their lives, using a series of examples to highlight the joys of everyday existence. In the first verse, he asks if people are truly engaging with the world around them or if they're neglecting their senses. He compares those who don't appreciate the richness of life to Old Mother Hubbard's bare cupboards, suggesting that they are missing out on a whole world of experiences. However, he also offers hope, saying that life is not an empty plate as long as you appreciate yourself. This line suggests that self-love is a crucial ingredient for living a fulfilling life.

In the refrain, Crosby provides several examples of things that should bring people joy. He asks if people are grateful for their nose, which allows them to smell roses, or their ears, which allow them to appreciate the song of a meadowlark. He also highlights the pleasures of touch and taste, emphasizing that the simple things in life can be the most rewarding. The chorus ends on a positive note, with Crosby reminding listeners to appreciate the gift of existence itself.

Overall, Crosby's song is a celebration of the little moments that make life worth living. By reminding people to appreciate their senses and their own worth, he encourages them to seek out joy wherever they can find it.

I certainly am Bing, it’s the simple things ❤

@Trombonology

This Decca side is a far cry from the film version, with just Bing singing to his own faked piano accompaniment. Johnny Burke's folksy lyric is quite a contrast to Van Heusen's fairly sophisticated harmonic structure, but somehow the two opposites work together. And however different the real Bing may have been from Father Chuck O'Malley, he sure knew how to convey breezy optimism, as we may appreciate here.
